Help Wanted > Playtesters for Quake2DS needed

#147240 - simonjhall - Mon Dec 17, 2007 1:06 am

Hiya,

I'm trying to get the first version of the game out within the next couple of weeks and I need the help of a few people to try and break what I've made so far. Any takers?

What I really need. (People to):
- play through the game and see if the 'game' is playable, ie ensure there are no show-stopping bugs
- make a note of stuff that's not right - eg something that's corrupted, something that's not drawn, a sound that's not played, 'interesting' messages on the console etc
- try and crash it.

Whatchu need:
- an inbox which is large enough to take several one megabyte emails
- the ability to reply quick enough to make it worthwhile ;-)
- time and patience to play through the game over and over
- a slot-1 FAT device and a slot-2 RAM device with a minimum size of 16 megs
- the Quake 2 data files
- knowledge of the game and how to complete it

Any volunteers?
Thanks!

PS: no idiots.

Safe. I'll be sending out some builds within the next few days. I've just got one thing I want to write first before I drop it off ;-)
(I'm really excited!)

You gotta be tough when you ride that central line at night ;-)

I have to admit I get a few stares when I say "Cheers Boss" to Bus drivers, newsagents etc anywhere outside of London.

Sound!

I've been bringing back "Cheers Chief"

Only more older bus drivers seem to enjoy that.

Sure, why not, I'll put my new SuperCard to good use.

#147517 - simonjhall - Fri Dec 21, 2007 11:59 pm

Do you have a slot-1 card to go with that, or just the supercard?

I know you dislike the idea of having to tool to resize/rerender/recompress all of the Q2 files BUT

How much of a performance increase would you expect to grab from this? If every model/texture/sound and blah was in a more native "power of 2" setup for the DS?

Quake/Quake 2 is generally 3 packaged files and with a CRC check.. the process should be fairly simple/idiot proof.

I think this should be given some serious discussion to help.. If the speed gain is of a respectable amount.

Tbh I think the differences in performance would be quite minor, eg by rescaling textures and resampling sounds.
What I do think would be useful however would be to take the original game maps and carve them up into lots of smaller ones, reduce the number of non-playable objects (space.bsp is excessive) and also rework the models and build LODed low-poly versions of them, for rendering in the distance.
...not too sure we can do that with a tool...someone needs to get in there with a map editor...but then the assets can't be redistributed!

It'd be interesting to see if I could get a copy of the (say) N64 or PSX assets :-)

I have a NoPass to boot it up.

#147602 - Tikker - Mon Dec 24, 2007 4:56 am

i sent a PM, but thought I'd mention here as well, I'm available to test

#149993 - Ultima2876 - Mon Jan 28, 2008 5:21 pm

I can test too if you still need testers. email is ultima2876 at gmail dot com :P

I can test on a CycloDS, and if you have any multiplayer stuff to test I can do so as I have 3 DS's (2 lites, one normal) and 2 CycloDS cards.

I also live in a house with other people who have similar equipment sets so mass multiplayer testing is possible too :P

#149994 - Tikker - Mon Jan 28, 2008 5:26 pm

you need a slot2 card with ram (ez flash 3-1, m3 lite, etc)

#149999 - simonjhall - Mon Jan 28, 2008 6:15 pm

'fraid I've got enough testers to handle at the moment, thanks! However I'll defo get back to you once it's time to mess around to networking :-)

(btw there will be NO networking in the first release of the game)
(btw2 tikker's right - you will need a slot-2 RAM card)
