Help Wanted > Ok, so I got this sweet idea for a game...

#155578 - Alphanoob - Thu May 01, 2008 3:18 am

As you may have noticed, this post is a total joke. But answer honestly, I think this might actually be helpful to some people. If you chose the last answer, you are probably some kind of programming saint.

My typical response: "Can I see some of your design document?"

As far as I can tell, the last one is closest to my response.

lol, which is why you are the admin here. And if I responded with: "design document? Uuuuh, about that...."?

EDIT: now that I think about it, this should be in off-topic, shouldn't it. most people on this part of the forum are here to help with questions like this... thus giving me a biased survey. whoops, oh well.

Great poll, but you left out the option for, "Privately laugh at you, then subsequently completely ignore anything you have to say in the future."

:D

Aww man, ur right! I should add that one (if that is editable, i am not sure though).

EDIT: I am really glad this post was a joke, cause so far 3 out of 4 people have wanted to shoot my head off, lol.

i voted "offer help", because it was you posting. :^)
but normally i would either totally ignore it (in essence, what 7S wrote :^D ) or read what the person has in mind and then totally ignore it. ;^)

and tepples is right: DD! :^D

I'd look at their post count.. and then ignore them. ;)

There wasn't an option I'd choose.

It really depends on what the post actually said. If they were looking for advice on how to implement their game then I might offer some help. If it's just another random post with no real substance I'd probably ignore it.

When I saw the words "sweet" and "idea", I immediately jumped to the conclusion that this thread was about some noob trying to get someone to make a game for him. :D

*picks option 1*

#155643 - Alphanoob - Fri May 02, 2008 12:06 am

lol, this is becoming a rather interesting thread... so far my head has been shot off 6 times, and there are multiple people running in circles screaming. This should go well with the sticky that was just added, although some people may be a little scared now...

*this thread is still just a joke, unless I suddenly decide I have a sweet idea for a game and have the daring to post it on a poll with so many violent options, lol*

@eKid: did my username add to that noob theory at all?
@Silent_code: thanks, lol =)

My general response is to give an analysis of what I think it would take to get the job done. This generally involves pointing out team size and time. It's also worth noting that if someone has a "sweet idea", they ought to have "sweet skills" to contribute or else the project isn't going anywhere.

I didn't even notice the username (I would have thought twice if I saw your username). When I saw the thread title my brain immediately switched into destroy mode! (boy was I fooled :P)

#155682 - Alphanoob - Fri May 02, 2008 5:59 pm

lol, look at the results of the poll, they are rather humerous. Many people are like you, changing to destroy mode. Main reason I posted this was simple: after that sticky was posted, I think that almost anyone would switch to destroy mode, even some of the people making posts titled similar to mine.

#155703 - silent_code - Sat May 03, 2008 12:04 am

hey, what sticky do you mean?

EDIT: oh, i see! you mean simon's topic. yeah, it's great!

the one that is like 2 posts above this topic. It was added like an hour before I started this poll. Good stuff, I hope ppl read it before they post stuff with a topic similar to this one.

I come from a RIDICULOUSLY elitist message board, where most of the members instantly blam posts like this. We have a rule stating that a poster needs atleast screenshots (not mockups) before being taken seriously for the express purpose of weeding out those that jump in and say things like "I GOT THIS GREAT IDEA. SOMEBODY MAKE THIS GAME FOR ME."

However, there's always that once person that genuinely needs help, and is genuinely willing to contribute to the project. That's why I always give topics like the one this pretends to be a chance. I wait till I actually read the post before I start going apeshit insane with fury.

If I bother to read it, I usually say something. 99% of the time, there is never a response. People with real business come back.

How true...and this is the funniest part to me. Random guy posts his great idea. We spend days discussing it, asking for design docs, giving advice (half of which is "forget it"), and the guy never shows up again.

Eh. It's easy to discourage someone without real resolve. You can't just think an idea is cool, you have to believe that it is enjoyable. If someone tells you it's impossible, you need to go off and think "it's your loss. this game could really be something if you gave it a chance." rather than "ILL SHOW YOU. ILL MAKE THIS GAME. AFTER MY NAP". You see the difference there?
