We are doing a 2d isometric "hack and slash" game (something like Diablo). We are already spending a lot of time on this project and we think that we are able to build a professional looking game.
We are using some good music from old games, but we now need some original music for our demo.

We (to say the truth, my partner did the sound engine) tested with a 50 sec. wav at 22 khz, mono (my partner would in better position to talk about the sound spec) and just for this sound, it took 1.11 mb. Is it what you call freakin' big, cause for our game, it's an ok size.

Well, pulling up my music list for FF6 (NERD ALERT!), I see that FF6 had about 3.1 hours of music in it. Based on your rating, that would be about 250 MB of music.
To be fair, Secret of Mana only had about 1.1 hours, so that's only about 88 MB.
The maximum cartridge size on the GBA is 32 MB, but I can't recall seeing any published games over 16 MB.
I think it's time to start thinking about writing a music player.

Does professional games always use midi ?

Professional games use whatever system they choose, but it's usually some variation of MIDI or MOD (which includes XM, SM and IT).

For music look at www.interimnation.com. He is a talented music artist based in Sweden and he already made some game tunes in many formats.
