Since I love these games so much, I've decided to compile up a remake of it for the GBA. I would need lots of help (I am not all to good with music...), so may I ask for your help.
Anyone interested? I will give details if needbe.
Oh, and yes, you will get in the credits, as will the origional cast of the game, etc.

Good news: Nintendo doesn't mind non-commercial fan works as much as some other publishers do, as long as you include prominent language on or before the title screen: "Fan game - not a Nintendo product". But it'd probably be a good idea to make up 150 of your own monsters (names and pictures; use the same attacks) for good measure, so that you can count it as parody in the worst case.

Make it extendable and use numbers from 0000 to 9999. That way the first three digits can specify species and the last can specify the morph level (don't call it evolution).

進化 (shinka) is the word used in Japanese games- a lot of games where critters upgrade in form, not just pokemon. The dictionary translation is evolution, but I don't think it has the same connotations as the English word "evolution". The first character, 進む (susumu), when used as a verb means continue or move forward. The second, 化ける (bakeru) means to transform. Forward transformation.

Evolve and evolution are pretty long, but metamorphosis is goofy. Jim Breen's WWWJDIC has a whole bunch of entries for metamorphosis. Color coded. See notes below.

Robots 変身 (henshin), 変形 (henkei) and I think 変化 (henka) might also be used for robots. 変態 (hentai) is 'pervert' when used as a noun and 'perverted' when used as an adjective. I have not seen it used any other way. That leaves 化生 (kasei) and 変成 (hensei). Note that I'm not a native speaker. This is only my impression of the word usage; I have not verified it with a native speaker.
Most of these kanji compounds contain the character, 変わる (kawaru), which when used as a verb means to change. The meaning is very similar to 化ける (bakeru), to transform. 変化 (henka) contains both characters.
We can say 'the larva became a pupa' in English. 'To become' is に成る (ninaru), with 成る (naru) as the verb to become. Pokemon actually uses this verb after a Pokemon evolves. "Pokemon A became Pokemon B." 変成 (hensei) uses the characters for 'change' and 'become'.

No, not really. If you are going to clone a game, I think it is best to do a global noun/verb replace even if the words you use basically mean the same thing.

"Morphing", when used in a videogame sorta context, sort of implies a Guyver/Bloody Roar/Power Rangers type deal where you can switch between the two at will. Y'all need to pull together and find a new word. >:/
