Well I came to idea I might try a simple 2 player game, not sure what though.
1st player:
-D-PAD
-L shoulder
2nd player:
-A
-B
-Select
-Start
-R shoulder
I know the poor 2nd player might have difficulties :p especially on original GBA, but it would work quite well on a DS

You could make a rhythm-action game using up to 5 buttons per player.

Super Puzzle Fighter II does this, and so does WarioWare to a limited extent.

Angor's SnowBattle does that on a DS. :) It is actually quite fun. The first player does get small advantage because of the pad. But I guess right/left handed person may do better on one instead of the other...

I think I'll make a multiplayer space game (one of those ones which you can turn 360 degrees around and if you go off the edge of the screen you goto the other side), not the best of fun, but still time consuming :)

heheh.
I've been debating trying to make a 4-player game on 1 gba...either based on the old warlords game, or a tron clone. For those games, each player could get by with just 2 buttons
It'd be near impossible to actually play, but I was thinking
p1: control pad
p2: select/start
p3: a/b
p4: l/r
But the idea of having 4 people trying to have their hands on that tiny gba is just downright silly

Where will people stand? If you want to get really close to your lover I don't see how putting a GBA between you will help.

yeah, that's the whole problem. I envisioned one person on each side of the gba (top, bottom, left, right), holding it horizontal. The game would have to be viewable from any angle equally.....

Mario Party advance has a few gadgets that do this.
The 4 player ones are 1 button though
A couple of games that do well with this setup are:
pinball where you control the flipper.
Reaction time games like some of the pokemon stadium party games
You could always do popular board games like
Hungry, Hungry Hippos or Mr. Mouth!

I have done something very like this with a Pac Man-like game, in which the multiplayer aim is to get more mints (long story) than the other person. Quite often, the scores are 51-49.

101 mints prevents ties.

The Mario Party advance uses P1=direction-buttons, P2=A/B, P3=L, P4=R
If you make it on Nintendo DS, you could do it P1=arrow-keys and L, P2=A,B,X,Y, and R. Then START button could be used to pause game and open menu.

Kinda related: I had this ideia of making a (vertical) space shooter where you hold the GBA verticaly and use Start and Select for shooting and the D-PAD and L buttons for something else. Do you think it would work?

That's called BulletGBA, but it wouldn't work on an SP, Game Boy Player, or DS.
