DS development > FM Radio on DS possible?

#94040 - gomaish - Sat Jul 22, 2006 5:54 pm

Is it possible to code an FM radio application for Nintendo DS? The antenna for the radio receiver could be the headphone wires(like other devices). I would love to have this application so that my DS will be a true entertainment device :)

The DS's wireless works only on Wi-Fi frequencies and protocols, not the music radio frequencies commonly called "FM". Some FM radio stations are available over the Internet (and could conceivably be received on the DS through a Wi-Fi access point), but not all are. Do you want to use the DS only to control the tuner?

I am not saying that it's gonna use the wi-fi inbuilt. I'm thinking of using the earphones/headphones to act as the radio frequency receiver. Then the coded program will direct and decipher the frequencies, making it a radio receiver! :) Isn't that most cell phones with FM do? Why not on DS :)

Mobile phones with an FM receiver have dedicated circuitry to receive the signal, even if they do some software postprocessing. What you're asking for is software-defined radio, and the DS doesn't have the appropriate circuitry to do that.

Most mobile (cell) phones have an arial cable running up the headphone cable.

They also have a dedicated FM receiver circuit, as tepples has already said.

Google for 'FM receiver circuit' or 'FM Radio circuit' and you can see the sort of electronics you need to receive radio.

You could build a circuit and use the GBA slot to power the device, but that's kind of pointless when you could just use a pair of AA or a 9V battery.

Someone made an FM radio that fits in the GBA and SP serial port. I would imagine that similar circuitry would fit in a GBA Option Pak, but at that price, a fellow could just buy a cheapo dedicated FM radio.

I had an FM radio for GBASP but broke it trying to mod it to work on the DS (I guess it DID have to be plugged in the the link port too :/ )

It plugged in the back and just had a switch to either use the normal GBASP sound, or radio

Thanks tepple and JaJa! Seems like this idea is not feasible for the DS. Anyway I've learnt something new today! You guys rock! :)

Any Chance this could be modded for DS?
It's cheap enough

Was there meant to be a link?

I believe Mrshlee was referring to "Someone made an FM radio that fits in the GBA and SP serial port".

This sounds interesting. Hook an antenna up to the microphone port... Tuning would probably have to be done in hardware, but I bet it's possible.
