DS development > free sfx + music?

#102771 - spinal_cord - Sat Sep 16, 2006 10:35 pm

I've been trying to find some free sfx and music(.mod) for a game i'm working on, but i'm having no luck. ok, thant not stricly tru, .mod music is everywhere, but I do need some bloops, swoshes and explosions for my game, and i'm finding nothing.

Does anyone know of any sites offering free sounds for games?

You could try http://www.findsounds.com. They have very random sounds.

But do findsounds.com results come with reuse licensing info (e.g. Creative Commons)?

Well if you want to be totally safe from licensing issues, then just get a sound recording MP3-player and go into the wild! Hehe.. ;P

You can check out The Freesound Project, everything there is under an attribution creative commons license, so basically as long as you give credit, you can do whatever you want to(and with) the sound effects. There's a link to ccmixter on that site, a creative commons music site. I'd never seen it until about two minutes ago, but it looks like the music on that site is under a variety of CC licenses so you'll have to pay more attention if you find something you like there.

you might want to check "catch that goblin" and "2nd reality" (and the like) by Skaven, or maybe the .MOD that came with "Pinball Fantasies" and "Pinball dream". they should have the bloops and swooshes you're looking for. I don't know too much about what licensing would apply, but at least that would get you bootstrapped.

thanks guys, that site seems a little useless for what i want. PypeBros - I never thought of ripping open mods to look for samples, thanks for the tip.

What I do to get my sfx: I open up my sample editor (Audacity is ok enough, and it's free), then I make noises into my mic, then fiddle with the audio filters until it sounds like I want.

If you find a variable resonant filter, you can generate noise and then use that to make swooshes.
