DS development > Are these Apps possible.

#110761 - jalapeno - Fri Dec 01, 2006 9:18 am

- [for nds lite]
- An app that turns the backlight off completely?

-An App that shows the remaining battery power.
-->moonshell shows battery temp, so i thought this would be possible.

->correct me if i'm wrong, but doesnt the DS menu only show whether the Battery is Green/Full and Red/Low

-I am a n00b when it comes to this sort of thing, so thanks in advance.

Yes, the backlites can be independently turned off.

The phat DS can only check whether battery is normal or nearly empty. I dont know, but i doubt it, if the dsl has more detailed info.

Ok, i've read abit more.

I take it that disabling the backlight in the ndsl for use outside the individual app cant be done?

I believe that LoveLite changes a setting in the firmware, allowing you to set a specific brightness level (in this case, off) as your default version. I don't have homebrew equipment atm so I can't personally verify this, but based off of the description, that's a main feature of the software. It can also do a soft reboot from most homebrew devices (no need to manually power your DS off and back on again). This feature implements the " libcartreset" library, another project the same user, Lick, is working on.

I don't think there is a global backlight off option, no. The lowest brightness setting is as close as you'll get, I think.

A custom app is able to support switching the backlight on/off without too much trouble, though :-)

Many games (such as Mario 64) even have the option. Do they write the change to firmware though?

I don't think so. I've only ever seen older games with that option, though. None of the newer ones seem to have it. Turning the backlight off on the DS Lite makes it impossible to see anything :-)
