DS development > Old DS iPod Convert - Please Help

#121975 - shaw020 - Fri Mar 16, 2007 2:25 am

I don't have any money and I was wondering if there was anyway that I could turn my old DS into an MP3 player. I am not a computer person so I need instructions that are simple to understand and follow. I do have a laptop and wireless router. Please Help.

As I told you in your other post, you will have to spend money in some form or fashion. Exactly where did you plan to store your music after all?

It will cost you money. No way around it. A decent amount. $40-50 for an R4 Slot1 + $10 for a 1gb microsd card. There might be better deals if you search.

If you're really hard on cash, a DS as an mp3 alternative is not for you.
www.frys.com has an Emprex mp3 player for $10. Then buy an SD card for it.

A guess we have Pop Sci to blame for this one, eh?

Why didn't they also mention that the DS is only capable of 32 kHz output and, while playing MP3s on it is nice for novelty value, it is a very poor substitute for a real mp3 player?

For those without an mp3 player to begin with, it's not just a novelty item. I use it pretty much each day so that I don't have to carry around my bulky CD player (though admittedly I could fit much more music on mp3 CDs that way).

Prior to this, I used the GBA GSM Player as my primary music source. While not mp3 quality, it was good enough for the noisy situations I used it in.

As compared to the 128kbit songs from itunes? people are already used to listening to degraded (compared to original CD) audio.

In theory, 32768 Hz is all you need. A 32768 Hz sample sequence can reproduce frequencies from DC to 16383 Hz, and for adult listeners and typical music signals, the energy in 8192-15000 Hz will mask anything in 16384-22049 Hz.

It sounds just fine to me, and I have pretty sensitive ears. It could be better, but that doesn't mean it's not good.

The problem with the DS audio output is not the frequency as much as the depth. There are only ten bits per sample, for a noise floor of -60 dB. If I don't use heavy compression on classical music, I get all sorts of hiss in the quiet parts.

Maybe we could hook up a headphone jack and DAC to the GBA port? ;-)

Play-Yan did exactly that.

I thought Play-Yan had a hardware MPEG decoder and just connected the jack to that?

I thought that hiss came from the sampling frequency. You learn new things everyday.

Anyways, aren't you annoyed by it? I seriously am - after I noticed it the first time I couldn't overhear it anymore. It's like a bad Vietnam memory that's always coming back ;) .

A little illustration: Play the hiss and compare the result in Winamp (or some other PC based player) to the result in MoonShell and DSOrganize.

Hehehe, I guess I'm not an audiophile, since I find stuff on my DS sounds just fine when played with a nice pair of headphones :-)
