DS development > Likely price of DS?

#23833 - dagamer34 - Thu Jul 22, 2004 5:07 pm

What you think the price of the DS will be in November(in U.S. dollars)?

EDIT: Round down to your price range, so if you think the price will be $149.99, then pick the $129.99 - $149.99 range. :)

I'm missing the option "$199.99 or more". If you add that, I'll pick it :) Otherwise I'll have to select the $179.99-$199.99 pricerange...

There has been news about the price and release date, don't know how accurate but it makes sense to me.

I can't seem to edit the poll! Can some moderator add another option please? "More than $199.99" Thanks.

It'll probably be in the $150-$180 range as Nintendo said they would be charging more than they normaly would, and this is considerably more considering the Gamecube is what, $100 stateside? As soon as the PSP is released - price drop. That'll hurt the PSP right there.

Lowering their products price as soon as their competitor's release theirs? That's so un-Nintendo-like.

Then again, I can't remember the last time Nintendo had it's product out before the competition's. This really will be a battle to remember. :)

Price drops have been a big part of the Nintendo strategy for the Gamecube, it would only be logical that they carry it over to DS. Seeing as Nintendo admited the DS will be overpriced compaired to their traditional pricing, it would make perfect sense if they dropped it to a more "traditional" level once the PSP came out. Imagine this, you go to the store to get a PSP, as your going by you see the DS. Would you rather get a $400 PSP, or a DS for $120 and get some games while your at it? Lowering the price right when the PSP came out would totaly undercut the PSP - especialy if Nintendo also included bundled games with that $120 pricetag. I think its very Nintendo - remember the Metroid Prime bundle anyone? That did a good job of taking some sales from Xbox [Live] that season.

I think "overpriced" is a poor choice of words, it carries connotations of intentionally gouging the consumer at the register. The DS will be more expensive than previous handhelds, but only because it's costing more to manufacture. LCD supply shortages for example.

And alienate all the people who bought the DS for the "inflated" price at launch. I don't think you'll see any DS price drops for about a year; Nintendo would have to wait at least six months to avoid a consumer backlash.

It looks like the matter is settled! The prices are $149.99 US for you United Statsians AKA Americans, and $199.99 for us Canadians, AKA Hockey Hosers Eh?

The launch date has been set to November 21st, though poor saps like myself who pre-ordered from places like EB have to wait 2 days as there is a 2-day hold on all pre-ordered merchandise. Of course, I kinda know Brendan (not you sgeos, unless your ARE the Brendan who works at EB in Penticton) and he might be able to expedite the process for me...

*sigh* I want my DS... I'm afraid I'll get bored of all those cool, neat new features before I even TRY any of them!

No, I'm not. Years ago I applied to the EB in Scarborough Towne Centre (Toronto, Ontario). They didn't hire me. Come to think of it, I also applied to the EB here in Madison, WI (I moved from Canada). They didn't hire me either. I guess... EB is just too happening for me? =P

#26961 - mymateo - Thu Sep 30, 2004 7:06 am

I applied, too. I didn't get hired. You know how you get hired at a place like that? Hire thugs to beat the living snot out of the manager(s) until they agree to hire you... as the new manager. Then fire the old manager(s). Out of a cannon. Into the sun. (Futurama quote there, Leela from the first episode) Sorry, loser moment there :P

Actually, being a really big loser who lives, breathes, and sleeps games will probably get you a job. That, and an open position, or a much more impressive resume than someone already employed. To be fair, the workers at my EB aren't really losers. I'm probably more of a loser than they are, with the exception of maybe one. But that's 'cause I don't like him. Come to think of it, I don't think I've seen him there. I wonder if he was fired... if that's the case, then I guess that maybe I could apply there and get a job.

ISSUES??!! You think *I* have ISSUES!??!!? Well, let me tell YOU ONE THING!!! I have SEVERAL issues! Of both EGM AND Nintendo Power! Mwa ha ha ha ha! (No, I'm not insane. At least, that's what the voices in my head tell me...)

Anyways, I've been meaning to ask you... what does your sig mean?

"Little kids and Playstation 2's don't mix. :("

I have a feeling it's a terrible story of visiting relatives who don't respect other people's property...

And of course I'll understand if it's none of my damn business, I'm just one of them curious types. :)

Why would anyone sane even want to work at EB - oh wait ;)

#27058 - mymateo - Sat Oct 02, 2004 8:43 am

Heh heh... sane or not, I bet they get good discounts. Not to mention, they get to go to E3...

Because the labour is comparatively more interesting than Pizza Hut? I'm not sure how the pay compares or if EB gives raises.

Indeed. Yeah, I tried to fix it yesterday, and well, I think I made it worse. I am going to have to go get a used one sometime.

Yes, it was a terrible story. Now I have no PS2... And you want to know how much Sony was going to charge me to fix it??? $107.86!!! I could get a used one for $119.99 at GameStop and get a controller and free game too!! Damn greedy company. Nintendo products are kid-proof! :)

Well... GC discs may not be kid proof, and granted the system itself feels a little less indestructible than its predecessors (moving parts = more easily broken), but the controllers are quite robust.

Ah, the good old days. Super Nintendo was good too, but the old NES was damn near impossible to hurt! And I swear the controllers were made out of the same thing that NASA uses on its space shuttles, 'cause it'll stand up to anything you've got, with the exception of course to the rubber start and select buttons.

GameSpot claims it will be $149.99

I'm totally convinced that that is why Sony *supposedly* has such a high market share. Whatever number of PS2's it is now that they are claiming to have sold, I guarantee the number of PS2 owners is no where even close to that. I think their figures are inflated because most people who have PS2's, like you, have had to replace them one or twice and I'm certain that many (most?) don't bother with Sony's "repair service".

Yea, that's what it'll be. Nintendo announced it a few days ago.

Hey, the GCN is a pretty tough piece of hardware. Have you seen that video of it being dragged behind a truck and still working!?!? I don't even think a Ps2 would still power up after that. Too many moving parts, especially the disc tray.
