It would appear that Nite2Unite and Nintendo has made some sort of deal. They are a auctioning a DS and 3 games for $4,999! Says you'll recieve the first DS released in the US.

Here's the site if your interested:

OR you could wait a few hours and buy the same thing for ~250$usd. wow I just saved you ~4750$usd. You can thank me later :P

Hmm, as stupid as that would be to buy, it's an interesting idea from a business standpoint. There's guaranteed to be people who would be willing (and able) to shell out for something like that, and it's a nice kick-start towards recouping R&D costs.

Although, I have difficulty beleiving this particular case is legit (But, hey, maybe it is).

I was just about to shell $5000 on this thing until I saw your post. Thanks for saving me a bundle on my Nintendo DS! :-)

(Looks at his own # of posts) D'oh, forgot to celebrate my 100th post... now I'll never know which one it was...

Anyhow, I'd have a little trouble believing this "deal". Sure, you're paying a lot for it, but if you're going to charge shipping, wouldn't that cost a little more than $8 (or $8.50, whatever it was, I can't remember exactly but it was more than 7.99 and less than 9.00)? I mean, at that point, shipping should be free, or cost more than that because the DS alone would cost that much to ship, and they're offering 3 games and "exclusive DS merchandise" with it, which probably means a T-Shirt and a pen that glows in the dark, or a T-Shirt that's been signed BY a pen that glows in the dark...

In either case, it doesn't actually mention WHEN you'd get the DS... I can wait another month... I hope...

If the "Exclusive Nintendo DS merchantise" was official Nintendo DS dev kits, hardware and all, perhaps that would be a much better reason to price it as much as it is.

Ha! It's probably a business dude who told Nintnedo that if they sell him 3 DSs for $1000 each a day before launch, he'd buy. Or it was a charity thing.

I don't know what that thing you linked to was, but the official auction was here: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=8137904315 it closed for > $500 and yes, it was legit. It was a charity auction.

This happened with the N64 aswell with people spending up to $4000 for one. But I'm not sure if that was when it was sold out, but it did eventually get sold.

Kidnappers were using N64 consoles and Tickle Me Elmo dolls as ransom for children.

If you ever resale such a system, I think other diehard Nintendo fans would fork over even MORE money...
