Since the DS has both proprietary and 802.11 spec'd wireless, I'm going to assume two things: (1) The DS will use the proprietary protocol to communicate with other DS' and (2) The DS will use 802.11 to go online VIA wireless router.
Assuming that (2) is indeed true, does this mean that Nintendo plans to branch more into online games? Let's face it, the options for online gaming on the GC have been slim, and depending on what kind of games you like, none.
I guess what I want Nintendo to do is have online options for their games, not just one or two but most of the multiplayer ones. I don't think it would be much harder to make Mario 64 DS, Animal Crossing DS, Metroid Prime: Hunters, or Mario Kart DS playable online.
How 'bout a little poll...
And since it's 31 days until the DS is released, I'll give everyone a week to buy theirs and make final decisions. As for anyone who doesn't buy their DS within the first week of its release, there's the "Other" section for you. But seriously, I can't wait... I bought my DS three months ago, this last month will be torture...

I put "P2P and Online" because P2P would be more fun than playing online with random people you don't know, but online is nice because how often are you going to find three other people in the same room with DS's who all want to play "Four Swords" or something at the same time? Although I am usually more into single-player anyway.

If Nintendo only wanted the DS to communicate directly with other DS systems, I'd assume they'd only need one protocol, but since they added the 802.11 wireless protocol along side their own protocol, they must have something else that DS is capable of. Hopefully something to do with online gaming. I selected "P2P and Online".

Maybe they just use 802.11 to search for and handshake with other nodes on their proprietary protocol ;)

i voted for p2p and online as well. I happen to be lucky and have 3 close friends that have also pre-ordered ds' so i can find people to play. But i have hi hopes for online play as well. It seems that their are atleast a few dev studios messing around with it.

3 close friends with pre-ordered DS'? You're lucky! I have bout 5 or 6 close friends, only 2 of them are into gaming, and one of them HATES the DS (PSP fan). The other is broke and doesn't see a reason to save up and buy one. So, I'm going to be stuck with nobody nearby to play any games on DS with, except for online, and maybe the kid down the street.

Ya, well they all work in videogame retail and one has had the chance to play it recently so everyone at the store is really into it. The manager is even getting one. Their talking about having wireless tournaments after hours at the store and all sorts of other cool stuff. Can't wait.

Do you live nearby? Any chance that I could join the tournaments if you do? Any chance I could join if Nintendo does this properly and I can play from overseas if necessary?
I'm gonna be upset if Nintendo make such a kick ass product, and doesn't use the new features to their coolest extent!

sorry mymateo, we're in colorado. But if anyone makes the lan over internet software then we will have to have some serious community tourneys.

i like online gaming in the online tournament, or large amount of participators in an game, sense i.e. as in racing games, but also in many genres..... also online worldwide rankings.... and such
i think all these things will become commonplace in the future, and i think its all good... of course multiplayer with someone in the same room is just as good, sometimes better.. but if you can be playing multiplayer online AND multiplayer on the console simulataneously that would be even better
as for Nintendo, 'course they should invest more into it, but that is down to them
i dont have any consoles right now anyway myself, gotta make the time and money to buy and enjoy them! right now im planning to develop a GBA game

I actually had a think about MMORPGs with the DS system. Like perhaps a Pokemon release which is entirely online, with a more complex pokemon leveling system, more items and larger worlds.
I think It'd be great to start off you own 'team rocket'like evil clan, and just spend your time trying to steal pokemon; or just team up with others in gereral. I think It'd be a great step for Nintendo, since the game models/items etc can be pre-installedon the system and any extras that the game developers would liek to add on later is cached/ streamed to the system and downloaded again when the user restarts the game console.
I really think that the DS has great online capabilities. Its just up to those brilliant coders out there...
anyway, thats my 2c.
BTW hi All; this forums rocks!

Let me be the first to welcome you to the gbadev.org forum, AdamtehGreat. (BTW, did you mean "teh", or "the"?) Anyways, we all look forward to new members, 'cause each new member means more brainpower! Mua ha ha ha! (I hope Simon doesn't kick me off for thinking of evil, devious plans to use this site to take over the world...)
And don't mind me, I'm a little strange, but I don't bite -- I only byte.

There was an article on the IGN website sometime ago that the people there made up that was about Pokemon and being an online game. I wish I had the link, but sadly I don't. If you look hard enough you might find it. Just an article, nothing more than that.
About the whole online thing, I was just surfing through the GameSpot website when I found this article. Although it talks about Square-Enix and their involvement with the DS, a simple sentence from Miyamoto is encouraging, which starts with "Well, we're planning to connect....". The only problem I see is whether they will be dedicated. "Planning" is just planning. Hopefully it won't end up being like "GC" planning.

hehe, nah, its teh. More original, IMO ;)
Well, I wouldn't be suprised if Nintendo is planning to dig deep in the MMORPG scene. And, since they're always so bloody secretive abotu their projects, I guess we'll just have to piece hints together.
That news on pokemon is interesting though.....
#28606 - mymateo - Wed Nov 03, 2004 9:44 am
I hope they do. With wireless abilities, the DS has so much potential. NOBODY will have to buy hardware for the DS to play wireless games, just a wireless router for the online games.
I wonder if we signed a petition, and got 50,000 people from around the world to sign it, if Nintendo would promise to make some big-time online games for the DS, and maybe Square-Enix would make some really good MMORPGs, like Chrono Cross (it has enough Playable Characters!)
Anyways, let's all hope Nintendo and all the 3rd parties pull this off! I can't wait... 18 more days... I can't sleep...

After looking at this thread, I looked into the link that "sp" provided, and it brought up a review from someone today. Seemed like any normal review, except I caught the following quote...
Quote: |
I managed 7? hours of battery life on a single charge, playing graphics-intensive games, blasting the music through the stereo speakers and connecting online with another DS. |
"Connecting online with another DS"? Online anyone?

Best guess is that this particular reviewer isn't one of those types to actually mean what he or she says (in this case a he). I'm guessing Matt meant just connecting wirelessly, as (to my knowledge) there are no games currently supporting online play.
But, rest assured, there WILL be games that go online. I've already went ahead and bought a wireless router just for my DS. Yes, JUST for my DS. I'm that sure of it.
... there damn well BETTER be games that go online!

Why did you buy a router? Why didn't you save that money for a DS game instead?

'Cause the router was on special. Staples has their 13th anniversary sale, it's an $80 router with an instant $20 rebate plus a $20 mail-in rebate which I sent off the very next morning, so if/when I get the rebate cheque, the router will have only cost $40. I work in a computer store, and with my employee discount the exact same router would have cost me $70. So that's why.

#29432 - mymateo - Fri Nov 19, 2004 11:55 pm
Sadly, it is not. I checked a couple days ago 'cause I thought about getting a wireless NIC for my PC, but things were back to original. They had some decent deals, like an antenna booster for my new router to extend the range, but I passed up on that deal until I find out if I need it or not, which probably means sometime next year 'cause nobody's making any online DS games just yet.
Is it just me, or was that a run-on sentance just now? Psychadelic.
