It's getting anoying. Really.
Of course everybody does a few spelling/grammar mistakes once in a while, but newcomers, PLEASE take time to check through your posts, and concentrate on you writing. I often run into posts in this section that is hardly understandable, which makes coming here a bad experience compared to the rest of the forum.
Shorthand is disrespectable, and it makes you appear as a fool.

You mean for example when people write "propper" instead of "proper" and "anoying" instead of "annoying"?

Heh. Speaking of which, "section that is hardly" => "section that are hardly".
If you're going to harp on people to use proper English, please at least do so yourself. :p

I am not american/brittish, but at least I do what I can to keep some sort of standard.
Feel free to scavenge my posts for non-obvious (to me) errors, it'll just make me better at my writing anyway ;P
I won't edit anything but the topic though, now that I make such a clear example myself ;P

Look, not everyone is a native english speaker. Could you Americans please lose the feeling of superiority just once, and live with the spelling- and grammatical errors we occasionally make? I'd like to hear you speak proper Dutch.
#30474 - localhost - Wed Dec 01, 2004 3:56 pm
The original poster said later that he wasn't from the US or GB so I assume english isn't his native language. Now the people that nitpicked his post were probably US/GB but they were just noting his errors as hypocracy. I don't speak a second language, but I would assume that major grammar/spelling errors might be more difficult for somebody to figure out that doesn't use english as their primary language.
I am american, and I bet you it is mostly americans that are using the improper grammar/spelling. I use a broswer with spell check so it makes my typos a little easier to catch.
As far as proper dutch, I think most dutch people speak great english. I think Amsterdam is a great place for an english speaking person to visit on their first trip to a foreign country. You get exposed to a country that speaks another language, but pretty much everyone also speaks english which makes it less intimidating.

I don't know, can non-Americans stop always assuming that Americans have feelings of superiority? Its becoming a tired cliche to a lot of generous and good hearted Americans. If the situation were reversed and Americans were making such generalizations, I can just imagine the response. :) :)

But anyway, this is getting off topic. I think the main problem with spelling has less to do with origin and more to do with age. Some of the posters around here are very young, either in highschool or even earlier. You don't tend to respect spelling at that age and the mind races to type. I am an old man by comparison and I recall those days.. Maybe a little bit more dilligence would serve the average visitor. But in the end its not such a big deal.

Some people are passionate about developping but English is not their native tongue. So, it is obvious they do not know the extensive and "exceptions" for every English grammar rule. Do they annoy you too?
#30479 - keldon - Wed Dec 01, 2004 4:51 pm
I think he's more annoyed when people write stuff like this:
Quote: |
it wud b a gd idea if da ds had dbl mem packz |
=D .. catch my drift?

I think you're right, and its a fair point. Its one thing to have an unchecked spelling or improper grammar, and its another when its obvious people are abbreiviating and rushing through their email that it flat out doesn't make sense.
Unfortunately its always been this way on the Internet :) *sigh*...

I usually refrain from any post that criticizes people, but in this case I think it is truly constructive criticism. My intention isn't to hurt anyone's feelings or to get on a soapbox.
Every post you make to any forum adds to a mental picture that others in the community form of you. People are less likely to help you and listen to your opinions if they don't respect you. There are dozens of people on this forum who I hold in very high regard because of their "keyboard" personality and their willingness to help, and I have never met any of them. They could be younger (dagamer) or seasoned professionals (miked) or whatever. It doesn't matter to me. In this space you get to define yourself.
If your purpose is to share an opinion or to receive help, you will get a better response if you *at least* capitalize your sentences and use basic punctuation. None of us are grammar nazis, but run-on sentences are hard to understand and they make you sound like a child.
It is a fact that many individuals on this forum have been offered jobs in the game development industry based on their reputation and project contributions. If this is something that sounds desirable to you, then write every post as if you were writing it to a prospective employer. :)

The main problem is shorthand, I would say. Sentences filled with "ne1", "u", "r", and so on are anoying to read. It doesn't take much longer to write, and the result is significantly (spelled correctly?) better.

I felt that it was appropriate in this section because this is where it's worst. You see it once in a while in the other sections, but there's just another kind of people coming to this board.
#30500 - tepples - Wed Dec 01, 2004 6:24 pm
I ought to work on a rules announcement and some dedicated threads for specific topics like what bemanistyle.com has.

Maybe soon it will be time for a DS only forum on dsdev.org? Oh, and that site needs to be updated a bit. It says that the DS is still 6 months away from being released on one of the pages. It was released last Sunday for people in the US, you know...

You might need to know where these people are linking from. With that then you can get a better idea as to how to divert them.
Maybe a hybrid approach somewhere between PDRoms and Nocash is needed. So they are given the information where they must read it to decide which link they want like PDRoms; and also give a link to some fanzime DS site like the nocash website.

Loving it! I relish the threads here that have nothing to do with development, and as one of the mojor offenders for poor grammar I think this should be placed into the anouncements section!
