Haven't tried this but this guy claims he modded his DS to play gameboy and gameboy color games.

I was excited about this too, but Darkain has posted a very reasonable explanation about why this can't be true. http://www.livejournal.com/community/nintendo_ds/80067.html

yeah... I thought it was odd that the news came from a livejournal site...

but then there are others who say they have done it and it works, im really skeptical.. lets see how it works out.
#31697 - tepples - Mon Dec 13, 2004 11:53 pm
I can mod a DS to play Game Boy and dual-mode GBC games too. And it has a better chance of actually working.

Bullshit. There's no Z80 in the DS. Simple as that.
Pry it open, take a look. This is just a crappy hoax perpetuated to fool the (admittedly not very bright) DS fanboys.
And if the ARM7 in the DS somehow does have the magical bits in silicon to run Z80 code, then I'll eat my hat. And post pictures.

One other reason why it sounds fishy is that the pictures were in fact some of the lik-sang pictures.
Also, what he referred as the cpu, the metallic thing, is I think the wireless module.
I think the cpu/gpu/etc. chip is under the cartridge port: on the lik-sang pics, there's a square drawn there on the other side of the PCB with lots of capacitors (or whatever) inside, and you can manually check that the upper side of both cartridge ports of the DS aren't placed at the same height, which means the ds cartridge port isn't placed right against the PCB.
(disclaimer: I don't actually know much about electronics, so I may be entirely wrong.)

The funniest part is that there are morons defending it by saying "Oh, he didn't have a digital camera".

i may be entirely wrong as well. i was trying to make my reply as quickly as possible to try to shut the guys up. weather it is the CPU or wireless module doesnt matter tho, it wont work. :)

It's like:
If you put your DS in the microwave for 30 seconds it will unlock the encryption and turn on WiFi so you can download games to your PC and play them as an .exe file.

With linking some other wires in your DS you can make it run at 500 mhz and it can communicate with Aliens using wifi... NOT!
Who wants to play GB/GBC games anymore anyways?

ill stop playing GB games when they move dr mario to gba or ds. :)
#31717 - tepples - Tue Dec 14, 2004 2:05 am
Even the IGNorant know about Dr. Mario for GBA. Or you could whip out your flash card and play this open-source clone.

i dont like the nes version its much easier than the gb version for some reason.
besides, i could use pocket nes and the rom for that. but i still choose to play the gb one
#31720 - tepples - Tue Dec 14, 2004 2:49 am
The NES version's bottle is one space taller. If you want a smaller bottle, try Dr. Wario, which you get after beating the first Jimmy twice in WarioWare.
Or just use Goomba to run the Dr_Mario.gb on a GBA flash cart, which you appear to have given your mention of PocketNES.

Well, it's a load of BS.
A) No proof.
B) You crossed the wires on an ARM to get it responding as a Z80 would?
C) If this was possible, do you think nintendo would have disabled it? They would have gotten more sales with total backwards compatability.
#31728 - Alex Atkin UK - Tue Dec 14, 2004 4:11 am
Lets look at it from the most logical point of view.
The GBA had a little button that was pressed when a GB/GBC cart was installed. This switched it into GBC mode which not only switched the BIOS over and the CPU but also output a higher voltage to the cartridge port than what GBA games use.
I find it unlikely the DS is designed to handle greater than 3.3V to the GBA port as why would it need more? So by that logic alone, it doesnt have the power to run a GB cart.
If it COULD do it so easily then there would be no point in Nintendo not including that functionality as standard as it would be a selling point. The only logical reason NOT to include it is to save money, meaning it just cant do it period.
Of course it will be able to emulate a GB, even the GBA could do that, but the DS being a lot faster should plausably be able to emulate a GBC (and plenty of other old consoles) perfectly. This still relies on a flash cart though so we are still waiting on progress for that.
Considering how long people have had their hands on DS hardware things are coming along quite well.

more reasons why it is fake:
1) his game screen shots are all in yellow. Goomba emulator plays GB games in yellow. GBA plays GB games in color.
2) the picture of the back of his unit w/ the game in it. he didnt even breat the serial number sticker... how else would he have gotten inside of his unit?

It seemed to work fine for me.
The DS is FAR more powerful, CPU-wise than the GB(C), and the DS contains quite a bit more RAM. Plenty of CPU/RAM for the Z80 to be emulated in. I think what's going on is there's some sort of back door that they burnt into silicon for Z80 mode (might've forgotten to remove during testing, the "hardware lock" things added right at the end of production due to this realization) and simply these quick solders fixed it.

1. Yes, but different digital cameras have a multitude of white balance settings.
2. Whatever the word "breat" means, I'm 90% sure this guy (girl?) didn't post his serial so the useless can't enter that serial on Nintendo's site and get 0-day game tips.

Hold Down+B as you turn on the GBC or GBA with a GB mono game. Fear the yellow.

that enables yellow + red, not yellow + green. there is no old-skewl mode on the GBA.
also, there is a pic of the back of his unit with an umbroken serial number label... there is a skrew under the label. it would require to break the label to take the thing apart.
also, the colours on tha GBA are very noticably color. under the default theme, ash is red and squirtle is blue. in his pictures, it was yellow + green. and unreachable colour combination, unless you are using something such as the Goomba emulator.

The glory of the hair dryer will allow you to soften said labels before removal, and allow you to reapply them at will.

I have not a webcam nor a digicam. Credit cards maxed, barely enough money in checking to pay my bills. I'll ask my co-worker if I can borrow his camera/card reader for a couple minutes.
At least all my Christmas presents for people are here.

18 actually, trying to pay for my college education while holding down a job at the same time. How about yourself?

Warranty, whatever. I bought two, with one being pretty much dedicated to hacking stuff, after all I had read about the wireless capabilities of this beast. $500 out at EBGames, (stupid "we just got it off the truck, but the only way we'll sell it is in a bundle") yes, but the satisfaction of being able to jam as many GB/GBC/GBA/DS games into this thing as possible, priceless. |
Far be it for me to call you a liar, but if you're trying to hold down a job and go to school, how do you manage to afford buying 2 DS's? Credit card, yes... but if you're smart enough to get into college, you're smart enough to realize "Hey, I'm going to be REALLY broke, what with college, and Christmas coming up... What the hell, let's max out my credit cards to the point where I don't have $80 to spare, which means if I get a paycheque late I don't eat, but at least I'll have 2 DS's!"
I'm sorry, but this doesn't hold a lot of water with me. I'm sure most other people (especially those who have gone/are going to college) would agree with me. I have a friend who has several hundred dollars left on his credit card, has a line of credit $3,000 more than he needs for school, and STILL refuses to get a DS, even though he'd like to have one.
And I know you're probably thinking "Who cares about your friend, he's not me.", but I'm using this as a general example of a college student who knows school is expensive.
Well, that's my $0.02 in any case... look forward to seeing those pics!
