as reported on the Nintendo DS LJ Community, if you put a magnet near your system, it will enter into sleep mode.
the magic spot is inbetween the X/Y buttons and the select button. i personally tried this and had success using a laptop speaker.
very interesting observation, i must say tho.

Probably stops the oscillator.
No oscillator -> "deep sleep"

It is by design. Place a paper clip next to the speaker. Wow strong magnet. Very resourceful on Nintendo's part. These little magnetic sensors can be found in all sorts of things. Most common on Door alarms for homes or businesses. Here's a link of a Radio Shack product that I am talking about. http://www.radioshack.com/searchsku.asp?find=49-532
Enjoy.

No wonder there's screen noise on the DS's top screen sometimes :P

Outstanding, I can't believe thats how it works, I assumed a switch in the hinge or something...

The magnet is how some laptops (notably my Powerbook) detect sleep mode.

That doesn't sound to safe for your laptop.
besides that, you laptop sleeping every time you shut your screen
seems kind of annoying

Laptops have had the feature for quite some time now. It's generally an option in your power management settings.

Most either do that or turn off the screen.

its sort of like a ghetto reed relay.
but instead of a magnetic force being generated by a coil, it's done by a magnet. When you put your own magnet there, it thinks that it has been closed and the magnet on the other part of the console had made the reeds touch.

Looks like the sleep function is purely software controlled; A GBA game will not sleep.
Means we will have to implement it as well if we want to have sleep ability.

Metroid Prime: Hunters - First Hunt has strange "sleeping patterns". The screen shuts off and the sound turns off, but the game continues to run, I found this out the hard way when I quickly closed it during a good run :P

Same with mario DS, I have taken damage as its sleeping after the screen has shut off.

Well that is definitely a glitch then, since Mario is supposed to go completely into sleep. It always has for me.
I had assumed the reason that Metroid doesn't properly use Sleep Mode is because it was just a demo. Or else perhaps they did that so people could run a "dedicated server" of sorts for Metroid multiplayer.

It's a demo not the full version, so it's going to have flaws. Who cares? This might be a test version that they fixed up for all we know.

well, I would have agreed with you 2 days ago, but I recently bought Madden 2005 and its screen just shuts off, but you can actually still play the game if you press buttons with the lid half shut while the screen is off.. and the power LED stays lit constantly as well (Metroid reacts the same way with the LED light and button pressing), unlike when the system normally sleeps where it blinks every so often. I'm also starting to suspect that it drains the battery somewhat while Madden "sleeps", since I left it closed while I was in the middle of a game and it only took about 4 hours to go from fully charged to dead (with sporatic playing).
Also, Mario64 WILL properly sleep.. you can't press any buttons, the LED blinks and I'm positive theres no huge power consumption.. but it's not like I sat there watching it :P

it makes sense that it wouldn't in multiplayer.. so maybe they just felt lazy when implementing it, and made the game react the same way to sleeping whether its in single player or multiplayer. The same might be said for Madden, but Mario lets you put your DS to sleep during multiplayer (although I don't know what the effects are if you're playing against someone.. just know about practicing)
#37050 - Zhila - Sat Mar 05, 2005 6:25 pm
Well, I do know one thing from experience. It takes a few seconds to enter sleep mode when the lid is shut. If you don't have the game in pause mode before applying sleep mode, that few seconds can be enough to have the game run unattended.

Happens quite severely with minigames in Mario64 ds. I haven't noticed any problems elsewhere though.

It generally takes WarioWare a few seconds to go into sleep as well.
