I was just looking into development and was wondering how much a DS can write to a cart. I figure it can do savegames, but is there a limit to how much can be saved?

Depending on how much your publisher wants to spend on replication of the cart, savegame sizes on official Nintendo DS game cards range from 512 bytes to 256 KiB. When you're still prototyping your game in homebrew, you use flash cards, which have a nominal savegame size of 64 KiB without bankswitching.
