DS development > Just a Question about the M3 and ScummVM

#51120 - SubElement - Tue Aug 16, 2005 3:34 pm

I was reading the ScummVM website and I noticed it said it will not work on the GBAMP. I was wondering if there was something to the design of the GBAMP, like how it works that disallows this, will it be the same with the M3 player, or will that rectify the problem?

Also, I just wanted to say that I think all the stuff you guys are doing is awesome and I can't wait to see what you come up with next.

ScummVM DS would have to be written to support the filesystem on the compact flash card to support the GBAMP because you can't load 10 megs of NDS code and old SCUMM Adventure game into RAM all at once, because that just isn't gonna fit. :)

scummvm does work with the gbamp its just he hasnt bothered with a .nds version (i dont mean that in a bad way!) there is an older version with a .nds floating around or you can compile it your self. Fortunately they are making a proper version i believe since its the only way to play the larger games with full sound etc

in other words you can play the floppy disk versions such as the monkey island demo that i have running on my gbamp

I have tried all sorts of different things to try and get SCUMM working with the GBAMP, I'm sure that getting this working properly using the GBAMP isn't far away but in the meantime is there any chance you could put the copy you have on the net to see if I can get it working?

#51150 - El Hobito - Tue Aug 16, 2005 8:45 pm

just try searching for scummvm and wmb and you'll find it, it didnt take me very long at all to track it down

That demo was cool, but it just doesn't work as well as the actual release does...no sound, either.

Okay, so I can assume that this will be the same with the M3 when it is released?

SCUMMVM works with Supercard so it's safe to say that the superior M3 will work as well..

#51233 - agentq - Wed Aug 17, 2005 12:36 pm

The GBA MP doesn't work with ScummVM because NDS files load all their resources into RAM. The old demo of Monkey Island 1 works because it is incredibly small. Unless you want to play some of the very old games like Manic Mansion you're not going to get anything inside of 4Mb

Eventually, ScummVM may be able to read the compactflash card directly and load only the resources it needs, and then it will work. But I don't have a GBA MP, so it's not going to be straight away.

Do you have paypal donations set up, I'm sure people will donate some cash so you can get a MP+CF.

He has it on his site.
I just donated ?20.00. Didn't find any way to leave a message though.
agentq: Look for my email: eribr@fafafaa
Use the cash to get that GBAMP.

On a second thought, use it to do whatever you want. Thank's for all your work so far.
Cheers!

Wow. I never thought anyone would actually use the donate button. In fact, I was unsure about putting it there in the first place.

Thanks so much DiscoBoy for the donation. I'm going to go any buy a GMAMP now since so many people have asked for me to look at it.

This is the right thing, right?

It says 'new version', so that's a v2 right?

Good old Lik-Sang, who sell everything that's cool!

Thanks again for the donation!

Yep, that's the version 2 GBA MP. I think I'll donate some as well...I just got my Day of the Tentacle CD in the mail today (courtesy of eBay), been playing it with the voices chopped off...awesome stuff man.

That's great! You should know that I seldom donate money like this but you certainly deserved it. It's me who should thank YOU!
Hope this don't bring any pressure on you. The cash you got was for what you've already had done, not for what anyone expect you to do.

#51329 - agentq - Thu Aug 18, 2005 10:13 am

Order placed! A GBA movie player and CF reader are now winging their way to me from Lik-Sang Europe.

Thanks a lot for that.

#51334 - SubElement - Thu Aug 18, 2005 2:08 pm

... I am confused. I realise that it wont work without modifcation for GBAMPv2, but I am talking about v3. Looking at the new stats, will it work unmodified?

#51336 - agentq - Thu Aug 18, 2005 2:31 pm

I think it's unlikely it will run without changes, but getting it to run shouldn't be much of an issue once I have one in my hands!

#51340 - NoMis - Thu Aug 18, 2005 3:52 pm

That will be awesome. No more 30 MB Limit wich finally makes talkie version possible and saves as much as you want :)

I am also hoping to compress the save states allowing more than one on a flash cart.

You're probably talking to the other guy there, but I personally don't mind donating to the makers of homebrew I really like. A nice gift to say thanks for all the work, and maybe motivation to keep working on it. lol

Yeah, even though the GBAMP has a limited onboard buffer (v3's is 256Mbit), the GBAMP people told me bigger files will work regardless.
