Is it possible to port to DS?
It would be great! :)
You can download the source from: http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/

I'm sure it would make the PocketPC version of dosbox look fast. In other words, imagine Bochs running on a Pentium I.

But it's "impossible". Well at least it will run but as slow as molasses in January -- very SLOWLY.
#54247 - Lazy1 - Sat Sep 17, 2005 2:22 am
Well, dosbox may not be possible but you could probably emulate an XT ( I think its 4.77mhz, can't remember ) at full speed.
Though you wouldn't be able to play commander keen there are TONS of things that will run on it - I think even sim city ( original ) would work.

I have a friend who is currently coding a "Reminisence" engine that can run FlashBack on the DS. I see no reason why a more general DOS emu couldn't be pulled off... Once I've finished my current DS projects I will seriously look into this.

Ah! Those WERE the days!
Anyone here play the Ultima series or Betrayal at Krondor??
You haven't games unless you gamed in the DOS-era... if your sound card wouldn't work and you kept messing with IRQs and DMAs, etc...

We're talking about trying to emulate a 30 MHz 386/486 processor on a 67 MHz ARM9. There's NO way to run an interpretter and emulating this is NEVER going to be real-time. Perhaps a 286 or 8086 emulator?
#54955 - Lazy1 - Fri Sep 23, 2005 9:06 pm
I think the most you could do would be a 16mhz 286, though thats more than acceptable for the kind of old x86 games people would want to play on the DS.
Hell, you might even get wolf3d to run at an _ok_ speed until someone makes a native port ( though I did get it to compile I still have quite a few unknowns about ds hardware which will slow me down a bit ).
#55181 - ravuya - Mon Sep 26, 2005 2:36 am
I would definitely be wary about emulating a 386 or higher, but an XT is certainly within the realm of possibility.

There is a native port. And unlike the Super NES version, the GBA version of Wolf3d leaves all the Nahtzee stuff uncensored.

I've been thinking of another idea now. Is it possible to download some open-sourced distribution of DOS (I think FreeDOS is open-source, not sure though) and moderately modify it for ARM cpus?
#55211 - Lazy1 - Mon Sep 26, 2005 12:37 pm
Its possible but the dos programs are still compiled for x86 so an ARM version of dos wouldn't help at all really.
And tepples, I mean a native port to the DS.

Emulating EGA/VGA planear modes aren't even working in Windows XP today (in windowed mode), because they are too slow. Most DOS games from that time ran on EGA.

Id love to play Alone in the Dark on my DS..it needed, like, 16mhz or something so if theory I think the hardware is good enough for emulating that game ver dos.
Id also like to run Little Big Adventure 1 but that probably needs too much.
Heck, theres loads of perfect old games it would be nice to run.
Speed isnt always an issue either...not on turnbased stuff.

Is it that you don't have a GBC or a GBA? Alone in the Dark is officially ported to GBC.

Don't mention that crap. It's a port of "Alone in the dark 4", which is comparable only with Uwe Boll movies. It's simpy awful & horrible. Real Alone in the dark was 1st (and maybe 2nd) part of series. Real Lovecraft style horror game.

Tooks the words right out of my mouth ;)
"Eternal Darkness" has more in common with the first Alone in the Dark game then "Alone in the Dark 4" has.
(allthough I wouldnt say #4 is as bad as Uwe's dren)
Alone in the Dark was a real turning point in games. Not many times you can trace a whole genra to a single tittle.
The same team also made "Little Big Adventure", incidently.
