DS development > Commercial development

#77771 - HyperHacker - Sun Apr 02, 2006 10:58 pm

I have an idea for a DS game (no, I'm not telling :-p) that I think would sell pretty well. Problem is I don't know how I'd go about becoming an official DS developer. Nintendo doesn't even give devkits to newbies and they cost thousands anyway. I figure I could sell it to a third party or something but I really have no experience there. The game pretty much needs a touch screen and microphone, so it'd have to be for DS. Any ideas?

O rly? Don't most Windows Mobile devices have a touch screen and microphone? Develop and sell the game for Windows Mobile, and then you might be able to convince a publisher to authorize a DS port.

damn.. almost every dev. is doing it for free :S

and uh.... you can make a donation place so you can get donations from other people if they really like it

Hey, nice idea. I'd have to buy such a device though... well, time to save up I guess. :-p

Honestly I never saw a PDA with a mic, but I guess they must exist.

HtheB, I still intend to make freeware for DS, PC and occasionally Game Boy just as I do now. However, game development is what I hope to do for a living, so I can't very well give it all away. Besides, I'd have to hire a few people.

Well I never said I'd seen a lot of PDAs. I'm practically the only one in town who'd want one, and I just use DSOrganize. ;-)

nintendo is picky when it comes to there license www.warioworld.com what u should do is create a prototype and send them to smaller game developers, and hope to publish u or give a job

Yeah, that's what I'll probably do. The biggest problem, though, is that if I made a prototype they'd probably have to use PassMe or FlashMe to run it. I wouldn't be surprised if Nintendo's license agreements forbid them from even having these. And if I send them source code, not much stops them from just ripping it off. I could never afford to fight it in court even if I could prove it.

I guess I could make a prototype for Windows, but using the mouse to touch wouldn't really be the same. :-/

#77810 - knight0fdragon - Mon Apr 03, 2006 6:32 am

what about a video capture

Hm, I guess I could try that. Is it possible to actually capture every frame displayed using the display capture (and ideally stream it to my PC via wifi) or would I have to use an actual camera?

Heh, maybe I'll get lucky and some emulator will support it.

You could send them the ARM9 and ARM7 binaries and they could use the official tools to build it into a ROM compatible with their equipment. However, you'll run into problems with this, due to Nintendo forcing everyone to use a common ARM7 binary that is probably not compatible with the Devkitpro version.

Hm, is there any legal documentation on how one would communicate with that ARM7 binary? I could try to build one that works similar to it, in hopes that the ARM9 code ends up being compatible with Nintendo's ARM7 code.

#77827 - chishm - Mon Apr 03, 2006 10:19 am

You'll have to ask someone who's disassembled it.

try to find a 3th party dev. like capcom/sega and many more.. :) (or nintendo offcourse :D) but.. that is way easier to develop :)

nintendo relase it's devkit only for "real" development company, that have altready done some game for other consolle. I've seen the question for the devkit and you need to have a "real" team and a lot of experience in game making.

Didn't you have to buy a DS? Given the price of DS homebrew (DS + PassMe2 compatible game + SuperCard + SuperPass2 + CF card + CF writer), you could almost buy a Windows Mobile device for that much.

Xgame wrote:

Then how does a development company gain its first console license? Isn't this a catch-22? Or do you define "consolle" (sic) to include the Windows and Windows Mobile platforms?

See if someone has cracked the encryption on the card so that you can create your own DS game cards. Maybe also it can be used WifiMe2 to replace the firmware to an older version to run unsigned DS game cards.

nindendo have the "seal of quality" and don't let to anyone to develop for it's consolle. sony, for example, give it's devkit to anyone whom wont to create a playstation game

#78029 - zzo38computer - Tue Apr 04, 2006 6:49 pm

Maybe you could also have a service, people to go the place, pay for service and someone can replace the firmware to support homebrew software

You dont have to have done programming from other consoles, you just need to show that you are a legit business that can actually make programs on par with nintendos satisfactory, this is both time consuming and expensive, as a single person, you have a better shot of just applying for a third party developer job, then get your name out there to establish some credential.

That's just it, I already have those. And for me it was Wifi card + GBAMP + CF card + CF writer. I got the DS for Christmas and it had V1 firmware. :-D

I'm having enough trouble building my own Game Boy cartridge. No way I could make one for DS. Besides, I don't think any licensed developer will want to (or be allowed to) use a cartridge I made or hack their firmware. Unless you're suggesting I just sell the game on my own DS carts without a license, which is a bit less legal than I'd like to do it.

I mean to sell the game on your own DS cards without a license. It is still legal as long as: The cartridge does not include official Nintendo logo, and it contains no Nintendo seal of quality or manuals inside the box. You also have to indicate that you are not affiliated with Nintendo.

Sony has the PS Family logo, which is roughly equivalent in strength to the Nintendo seal.

I have thought about that topic much too. Dualis allows capturing but there are 2 problems: Dualis is slow. Dualis doesnt run my roms because i use many 3D futures... )-:
Hmhm ok there are tools to capture the entiry display i think. With another tool u could splittout that parts which belongs to NDS-Displays.
And then u could pitch the speed to that speed the nds runs ur rom.
And another hind: Sega could buy ur game. Go to sega.com they have sometimes jobs and they allways searching for games...
So if u send ur video to there they perhaps invite u to work for them or they could buy ur project. But it realy has to be bugfree and awsome in one or other way. I think even Tales of Daguar (which seems to be best homebrew for now) would have no chnace i think.

An old friend of mine got his start in the industry on the Nintendo platforms, he and his employees had no prior professional experience in the game industry. They got their license without issue.

Sony does not just give a devkit to anyone, you must be licensed first and foremost, and can apply for the devkits only after approval. They're not free either. They also have similarly stringent licensee requirements (compared to Nintendo).

It's not hard to find or make a program that would capture only the game being displayed on an emulator, but no DS emulator I know of really works that well.
