DS development > ds overclcoking and Xvid/divx

#79092 - antaril - Tue Apr 11, 2006 3:57 pm

hi there,

one question. I habe read this Extra WIIIIIDE link

Is it possible to overclock the ds and run XVid or DIVX Videos?? Or does the ds damage? overheat?

Thanx alot
greets

Antaril

(sorry for my bad english)

#79146 - fartz - Tue Apr 11, 2006 9:29 pm

I doubt it will ever be done overclocking a ds is very complicated and requirers hardware and is said doing it with software is most likley very imposible you can check a video of some one doing it witth a hardware hack here. http://www3.youtube.com/watch?v=PYIvASbELkw&search=ds%20overclock

i doubt it damages the cpu,
and if it was to over heat,
i think they could add in the video player,
a simple turn off,
(the ds has a cpu tempature sensor :) )

oh yeah,
um timing is gonna be very weird to get it perfect,
because arm9 & arm7 & timing are all one chip...
if you overclock arm, your making time go faster for the ds...
or so i have been told :P[/i]

lol that videos looks so fake, hes just speeded up the video, look at the way everything (including the screw driver) moves unnaturally faster

#79226 - Kayouu - Wed Apr 12, 2006 7:12 am

Huh, that actually should work saw that long ago I have a better vid of it look at the instructions ill show you guys another video of it on some other ones soon.

{EDIT] - Oh. and no dont see how that would let you play divX video or anything but something like that is thought of by some people I know but it would also be a little hardware add-on. But.... Yup/

It would let one run the decoder at an acceptable speed and pixel count.

Wow, a place for ds hacks. I want to hack my spare ds since i stole it from a boy from school lol. I don't really care if it blows up on me.

Is there a place for more hacks?
I heard theres a debug button on the ds, I really want to do that but I need to know what I need to do it. Also all of that was in japanese, is there a translation? Thanks

shaz stealing is bad,
but feels oh so good...

oh yeah,
relating to the topic and your question,
ever heard of google translation,
or bable fish?...

they are very common for translating languages on webpages...
lol

Today (Or Yesturday) I woke up 5:09pm!

what?,
its just engrish,
its very simple man...
even for a sleepy person,
lol...
"it turns the power on"
translate from engrish to english like so
"you turn the power on"

SIMPLE :D
.....
anyway,
GET SOME SLEEP.

Ok, the logical fallacy here is that the DS is capable of playing XviD at normal speed. It simply isn't. Moonshell struggles with MPEG-1, although admittedly it hasn't been optimised for all the variables that can be hardcoded (256x192, 4:2:0, 16-bit output, and so on).

MPEG-4 is a lot more complicated, which is one reason why small iterations of the encoding requirements can produce entirely different codecs. It also takes a lot more power to decode. There's a reason why my little Pentium-233 can't decode XviD to save its life, but does MPEG-1 fullscreen just fine.

Overclocking your DS isn't gonna help. Not unless you can run it at 500% normal speed, and that would mean liquid helium. The LCD wouldn't like that.

I don't beleave the DS can decode 256*192 divx. But if anyone want to try, write a player and see, whats the biggest divx you can decode in realtime. If you can decode at least 128*192, cou can think about overclocking to decode fullscreen...
I wont stop anyone trying this, but the simple answer seems to be: no, the ds seems to be too slow.

#79453 - Zippi - Thu Apr 13, 2006 8:31 pm

Ich have test to overclock the ds but now it have only 1/2 speed.

Its funny to play games with 25 mhz, but not more.

someone should really see if this idea will work :P,
maybe it can have buffering,
and put what it decoded when you first started the videos program
into supercard or m3's sram?...

(has anyone overclocked their ds x1.7 and tried playing someone online in mariokart or locally?...,
that would be So funny,
you going like a rocket and they are crawling along :D)

well this can be done if the clock crystal is outside the ds IC
gba overclocking was possible by replacing the clock crystal on the MOBO

would slo mo be possible by finding the VBLANK and making vblank twice per cycle or 0.5 speed

im not testing anything with my ds like that :P,
untill i can get 2 more ds's lol,

but if this is posible,
it could benifit a lot of stuff :D
hope it can be done :)

I have test wifi with slow mode but it does not working.

Here is a movie from my ds in 0.5 speed.

I have a cell phone that can play mp4 with out any problems. Is it more powerful than my DS? I would think not but I could be wrong.

#79489 - tepples - Fri Apr 14, 2006 12:39 am

Many mobile phones have either a more powerful CPU than a 67.1 MHz ARM9 or a dedicated MPEG-4 video decoder ASIC.

My heart beat is going ten times it's normal speed!!! Thanks to tepples.
I clicked on his sig, (TakeMeOut) and it hit me! and plus its 1am here!

i just got a brainstorm,
and this time its not hail(now that hurts...).

how about creating a flashcart with a mpeg4 decoding chip builtin?...
and we can have it decode it and send it to the ds in simple format?...

would that be better?,
i mean if it could work and not take to much power lol...

if i new anything about circuitry i would start making plans for a ultracard...
(i really need to take some classes :P)

we could even include a microprocessor,
(should have suggested this before nurtuim ordered his parts ...)
STUPIDME!...
lol
