DS development > Is it possible to make a button configuration for gba mode?

#88368 - fartz - Mon Jun 19, 2006 3:03 am

Could it ever be possible to configure the ds's gba mode to use B and Y instead of the annoying A and B buttons?. Because playing gba games like mario mega man donkey kong and many more with A and B sucks on the ds's button layout. It feel very awkward and alot of people hate it. So could it ever possible to do this thanks ^_^

from the way i see it NO.

stuff like how the gba mode runs on the ds is controled in the BIOS,
and the BIOS is hard to change and imposible for a software to change...

so simple NO its not posible to change...
you wanna play gba games and feel comfortable,
USE a GBA :P

Yes there is. Play emulated games inside a DS based emulator.

Then don't play GBA games. Play NES games, or wait for other systems' emulators to be ported.

perhaps someone will create it someday

after all GB(C) was emulated on GBA

Gba is more advanced then Snes isent it?>. So wouldent that mean gba games would be harder to emulate then snes games. Anyway snes emulation is horrible on ds and if gba is worse there no point in looking forward to it as i see it.

Of course the DS can emulate GBA.
Altho i wouldn't call it emulator, but interperter, since addresses needs some changes.

ARM7 asm is compatible with ARM9 asm. Video HW is almost identicle, sound needs to be sent to ARM7 and SIO to wifi :D

It's probably possible with the exception handler, but a pain. I/O registers especially might be a problem.

Are you sure the button configuration is in the BIOS? It's not just hardwired? O_o

gbc was NOT emulated on the gba iirc. The gba actually has the Z80 core in it but it is turned off in gba mode.

the gba cart connector has a switch that can tell when a gba pack is inserted (the little notch out of the cart is what doesn't trip the switch) or when a gbc/gb pack is inserted (the cart doesn't have a notch, therefore trips the switch).

But all that being said, a gba emulator for ds should be entirely possible, but it wouldn't exactly be an emulator, more of an interpreter. This is what the (good) gba emulator for the gp32 did.

i am referring to Goomba, not the actual hardware

However on a related note, there is a GBC emulator for GBA: Goomba Color

Yes, but it runs very bad. I can't understand why the creator refuses to port it to DS.

Does anybody involved with Goomba's development even own a DS and a NoPass? Does anything in Goomba's license forbid a member of dsdev.org to make that port himself or herself?

I have not checked, but I thought all emulators created by Flubba and their source can be used freely. One of the emulators was in fact used by a company (with slight modifications) to run classic games and was sold as a commercial cart.

Runs bad? I've never had a problem with it.

If you really care, install a hardware switch to change the buttons. I remember seeing a site about someone who installed a switch to do that a quick google search didn't find the URL. I don't mind using A and B but I never owned a GBA.

Big GBC games that bankswitch often will slow down. Try Pok?mon Gold or Silver and see how slow it runs when you're moving.
