DS Flash Equipment > Can the M3 adapter use a 8GB micro drive?

#88884 - Pinesal - Thu Jun 22, 2006 1:03 am

Fry's has one advertized for $139.99 that's a killer deal. I want to know if I can use it with M3.

Well Compact Flash card adapters (and presumably the MMP) use the card in IDE mode. Since all CF cards support LBA, this gives a maximum capacity of 2^28 addressable sectors * 512 bytes per sector, or approximately 128GiB (137GB). If the driver they use is written properly (ie, supporting 32 bit addressing) then they should be able to support cards that big. However, files are still limitted to 4GiB in size (this is a limitation of FAT).

microdrives are too thick, so you need to cut the m3 in order for it to fit

#88907 - tepples - Thu Jun 22, 2006 4:37 am

People have reported success with careful application of a cutting tool on the GBAMP v2, and the M3 has the same shell as the GBAMP v2, so it just might work. However, watch your battery life.

Think I'd be better off getting a 4GB CF for $79.99?

your good with that search feature arn't you?...

oh and to respond to Pinesal,
i would say your safer getting the 4GB microdrive,
but im not sure if you can cut in that spot i cut in on the m3,
since i don't have one...

someone should make a half sized 4GB type I compact flash card :P...

it would be completly engulfed into the supercard :P

I noticed that some portable media players have large hard drives, yet are cheaper than a MicroDrive of the same capacity. Does anyone know how difficult it would be to modify the socket on one of these to suit a CF slot?

*cough* Zen Micro *cough*

from what i have heard some mp3 players doesn't need any modification to work as a CF card,

a current mp3 player i know has a 5GB drive so yeah :P

The ZenMicro can take a standard CF card without modification. I think microdrives have the same interface as CF in general although, from what I've heard, some manufacturers modify the connection to prevent use as a cheap source of microdrives.

It used to. But they changed the connector to stop people taking microdrives from them, or using CFs in them.

To swimgod:

If BIOS for the M3 is written to recognize the LBA, why wouldn't it? 4GB is NOT the limit. Only reason Datel sells a prepackaged 4GB Media player for DS/PSP is because the 4GB microdrives are mass produced and are cheap. Look at the Datel Max player empty shell where you put in the media: http://us.codejunkies.com/shop/product.asp?c=US&cr=USD&cs=$&r=0&l=1&ProdID=750

They state you can put up to 8GB, but it must be in the CF format.

Ok I have the microdrive... an just as mentioned, it doesn't find the M3 adapter. However, If I unscrew the adapter and take the top off the micro drive easily fits. But I think the cover should stay on.

Someone posted a link earlier a thread where someone mentioned altering their GBAMP with a knife. Where do you alter it and how?

#89099 - tepples - Fri Jun 23, 2006 3:02 am

You use a utility knife or a rotary cutting tool to remove most of the part of the GBAMP plastic on the side of the CF slot opposite the circuit board. (On a GBAMP v2, this is the red part.) If you already have a Microdrive, you will be able to see where the raised part of the card is so that you know where to cut.

Does the M3 support FAT32?
Does homebrew support FAT32?

Homebrew definitely supports FAT32 (and FAT16, and FAT12), but I can't say for absolute certain about the M3.

GBAMP v2 supports FAT32, so I'd guess that the M3 (GBAMP v3) does too.
