DS Flash Equipment > New To Homebrew. Reccomendations?

#105909 - DtotheG - Fri Oct 13, 2006 12:54 am

Hey, I'm looking to play emulators and whatnot on my DS. I also want to watch Flash Movies (like Homestar Runner and Experiments and Crap)

I'm looking for a method that's cheap and minimally intrusive (won't entirely funk up my DS).

Thanks in advance

well, for the Flash Movies, you'll Prob. have to convert them using a Program like Amor SWF to AVI, that's what I do, and if you have Moonshell, for whatever flashcart you are using, get a Program called Batch DPG, as for emulators, there are a bunch of sites, for homebrew stuff, and lots of emulators, Go here > http://dl.qj.net/index.php?&catid=221&p10=4 This is a good site for Homebrew Roms, and there are also emulators, and I think it tells you how to use them, too.... Is your DS Flashed?

No. I want to know what components to get that are A. Cheap and B. Non-intrusive to my DS (I won't have to do any poking around)

#105915 - tepples - Fri Oct 13, 2006 1:40 am

The recommended components for running DS homebrew are NoPass (any of several brands), GBA Movie Player v2 CF, and a CompactFlash memory card.

OK, which NoPass, GBA Movie Player v2, and Compact Flash would you reccomend (and is the cheapest)

But you are sure I don't have to mess with the circuitry or anything (like PassMe where you have to shove something in the DS slot with a regular DS cart)?

Please fill the Location field in your profile so that others may point you to appropriate topics in the Retailer Feedback section. The following assumes that you live in the United States of America.

Cheapest NoPass card is probably MAX Media Launcher made by Datel, sold on Datel's own site (link and feedback). Cheapest CF card is whatever you can find on price comparison sites or auction sites. There is only one product called GBA Movie Player v2 (CF version), made by MovieAdvance, and you can find them for $25 including shipping on a popular auction site.

NoPass looks like a DS Game Card and is inserted into the DS slot just like a DS Game Card. You don't need to open your DS battery case and jam a pair of paperclips into a hole unless you want to make the DS capable of running homebrew even when the NoPass is not inserted.

OK, but what kind of Compat Flash would I need and is there any "online store" where I can direct people (Christmas is coming up) or where I can get it all in one convienient place.

#105928 - Lick - Fri Oct 13, 2006 7:51 am

If you care about your money I think it would be wiser to flash your DS. By running homebrew on an unflashed DS, it would mean that your firmware could be erased and your DS would then be bricked. Having all those extra hardware (GBAMPv2, NoPass..) sucks when your DS is broken, I can tell ye.

1. Where is an online store I can buy all of this?

2. Do I need to spend more to Flash my DS?

That's the one question to which we're not allowed to give a straight answer, unfortunately. Please read the rules. You are expected to visit the Retailer Feedback forum and compile a list of stores that sell each product yourself. Granted, this is duplication of effort, but SimonB, the administrator of forum.gbadev.org, appears to like it that way. I can tell you that auction sites are the best to get a GBA Movie Player, and office supply stores are decent to get CompactFlash memory card and a CompactFlash (or multi-format) writer.

Once you can run homebrew, you can flash your DS with a set of precision screwdrivers, a roll of cellophane tape, and two metal paperclips.

Sorry 'bout that. What's the MOST I could expect to spend?

#106022 - tepples - Sat Oct 14, 2006 5:32 am

I don't see any rule against giving the actual prices that I paid:
 • MAX Media Launcher (NoPass): $25 incl. shipping from manufacturer's own store
 • GBA Movie Player v2 CF version: $25 incl. shipping from a random online auction venue (make sure to look for the S&H price and then set your maximum bid at $25 minus S&H)
 • 1 GB CompactFlash memory card: $40 at a random office supply store
 • USB multi-format memory card writer including CompactFlash: $20 at a random office supply store

I need to buy ALL of that? I thought I only needed the 1st three things.

BTW, as a tally (didn't spend a dime yet):
[*]NoPass- $25
[*]If this auction is what I need, (GBA Movie Player)- $3.75
http://cgi.ebay.com/GBA-SP-Movie-Player-2nd-Version-CF-Card-Reader-512-mb_W0QQitemZ320036894655QQihZ011QQcategoryZ18807QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
[*]Same deal if this is what I need, $8.01
http://cgi.ebay.com/SanDisk-Ultra-II-CompactFlash-1-0-GB-Memory-Card-CF_W0QQitemZ180036750759QQihZ008QQcategoryZ48526QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
[*]Once again if it's what's needed <$10.00 (USB Multi Format Memory Card Rewriter)
http://cgi.ebay.com/USB-CompactFlash-Compact-Flash-Memory-Reader-Writer_W0QQitemZ250038782883QQihZ015QQcategoryZ43450QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

So I got about $47

DON'T BAN I'm DOUBLE CHECKING IF THIS IS WHAT I NEED!!

How else would you get files onto the memory card?

5 buck CF reader from newegg?
5 buck CF reader from newegg?
Seriously, I got a $11 one from newegg which reads like a gazillion formats, is compatible with linux, and has an extra usb port on front. if you want to only get a single-format reader, they can be had for uber cheap.

also, not sure if you know how ebay works, but just because the price is $3.75 now, that doesn't mean you will get it for that much.

and finally, please use syntax when pasting long urls (otherwise it funnies up the layout)

Or so they claim. They like to count a single format multiple times:
 • CompactFlash is often listed twice: CF I, the thinner form factor used for flash memory, and CF II, the thicker form factor used for CF hard drives. Sometimes CF II is listed as both CF II and Microdrive.
 • SmartMedia is listed thrice: SM 3 V, SM 5 V, and xD-Picture Card.
 • Secure Digital is listed at least four times: MMC, RS-MMC, SD, miniSD, and (if they're sneaky) both TransFlash and microSD.
 • Memory Stick can be listed four or more times: Memory Stick, Memory Stick Duo (shorter version of same), Memory Stick PRO (Memory Stick larger than 128 MB), and Memory Stick PRO Duo.

Getting one that can write both CF and SD is useful if you plan on using more than one kind of adapter. Getting one that can also write SmartMedia or xD Picture Card is useful if you have an older camera that uses it. Getting one that can also write Memory Stick is useful if you have a PSP.

OK, but are the e-bay auctions what I need?

Is this what I need?
But shipping from WINSUX is a bitch!

I got the advice from here:

#106124 - tepples - Sun Oct 15, 2006 3:59 pm

Yes, you can use the USB CF writer to replace the USB multi-format writer for this purpose.

Whew. Because I just won the auction.

#106244 - DtotheG - Tue Oct 17, 2006 4:11 am

With the NoPasses that have disc space, can I just get that and the reader/writer?

#106245 - tepples - Tue Oct 17, 2006 4:42 am

You can use a NoPass-RW card (e.g. Ninjapass or DS-Xtreme) with its writer, but first you have to verify that your chosen version of Chishm's FAT library (gba_nds_fat if you need directory reading or the newer libfat otherwise) supports a particular NoPass-RW card. A straight NoPass plus a GBA slot CF adapter is likely to be compatible with more homebrew apps and tools.

"A straight NoPass plus a GBA slot CF adapter"

The CF adapter you choose will affect the price and compatibility. A GBAMP, for example, is really cheap but doesn't run big old homebrew (since it lacks ram). A SuperCard CF runs most homebrew I think, and it's probably one of the best solution if you don't care about huge things sticking out of your DS.

Only the CF sticks out, which is a lot less than what sticks out on the GBAMP2

Do the Ebay auctions in anyway represent what I need?

Yes, you can run most DS homebrew with CF reader/writer + 1GB CF Card + MAX Media Launcher + GBAMP CF.

UPDATE!

I got my NoPass, for $27
and a Reader/Writer for $7 (GOT!)
GBA Movie Player for $16

SO FAR: $50

I got a CF card lying around somewheres.

Does anyone know a few essential programs for my DS and PC to aid with my DS homebrew?

#107275 - Lazy1 - Sat Oct 28, 2006 4:34 am

If you have a mac plus lying around, try grabbing Mini vMac DS...
[/shameless plug]

Nothing like sim ant on the go, too bad I can't find the original sim city anywhere.

Other than that, lets see off the top of my head:

moonshell
nesds
picodriveds

#107389 - OOPMan - Sun Oct 29, 2006 8:24 am

For homebrew, yeah, although I don't think you'll be using Moonshell with that amount of space...

It depends on what you would want to use MoonShell for.

People who have been on this forum for a few years should remember my GSM Player software for GBA, which played up to 150 minutes (2.5 hours) of music encoded at 30 kbps from a 256 Mbit (32 MB) GBA flash card. The 64 MB of your card is twice this. In addition, MoonShell uses the DS's additional CPU power to decode Vorbis, which is stronger at a given bitrate than the codec that GSM Player used. Bitrates down to even 40 kbps are still listenable in the noisy environments typical of handheld use.

Movies, on the other hand...
