DS Flash Equipment > MAX Media Player for DS does not display JPG files

#119283 - jcperl - Wed Feb 21, 2007 2:46 pm

Hello,

I have a Nintendo DS Lite with MAX Media Player for DS and I installed MoonShell Version 1.6 (stable) BUT I cannot display JPG files ???

Thank you in advance for your help.

Best regards, Jean-Claude Perlberger.

#119284 - tepples - Wed Feb 21, 2007 2:59 pm

Are the .jpg files encoded progressive? Try using jpegcrop (GUI) or jpegtran (command line) to convert them to baseline optimized, and you may have better luck displaying them on small platforms such as the DS.

thank you for the reply but I don't know if the .jpg files are encoded progressive (how can I see that ??).

Best regards, Jean-Claude.

When the JPEG has failed to load, try holding Start to see the error message it gives you. It will probably mention "progressive" if that's the issue.

It works this way in 1.51 at least, haven't tested 1.6 yet.

I don't see any message !

In fact I get a "?" as icon for .JPG and also .TXT files.

I am a bit unsure because on my CompactFlash I had

1. a MoonShell directory (MoonShell.nds, patch_file) from http://us.codejunkies.com/mpds/binaries/startup_122.zip

2. a moonshl directory from the installation ofMoonShell Version 1.6 (stable)

Are these 2 directories necessary ? or should I delete the first one ?

Best regards, Jean-Claude.

You could try moving the Moonshell .nds file into the root directory, though I'm not sure if that would work.

I would suggest deleting all Moonshell stuff off your card and redownloading and re-installing 1.6 with the included setup.exe file.

#119343 - Firon - Thu Feb 22, 2007 1:54 am

tepples: Moonshell can display progressive JPEG if you set ProgressiveJPEG=1 in jpegaccu.ini (in the plugin folder). Of course, large progressive images still won't load since it can't really use the PSRAM properly.

I tried all your suggestions: nothing works except fortunately playing MP3 files !

Can you give us a list of files in /moonshl/plugin?

You're trying to open them from the MMP menu, aren't you? You have to load MoonShell first.

(if I'm wrong, sorry - but MoonShell doesn't have icons and the MMP menu does)

I have ..JPG files in the VIDEO directory and .TXT files in different directories and I can open none of them !

What do you mean with "load MoonShell first" (I get a "?" as icon ) ??

What do you mean with "MMP menu" ?? I get a kind of Windows Explorer where I see the files and directories is that what you mean ??

Thank you in advance for your help.

there should be a moonshell.nds or shell.nds. you have to start this one first (it is called moonshell).

after starting moonshell you can browse all directories and view JPG and TXT.

YES, it works in this way ! THANK YOU !!

BUT it is really not very userfriendly !!

I also deleted the moonshl directory and the corresponding files in the root ! I don't really understand what is the purpose of this MoonShell version 1.6 in this case ??

Best regards, Jean-Claude.

#119516 - chuckstudios - Fri Feb 23, 2007 10:45 pm

Umm... WHAT?

You are happy that it works... so you delete it?

And what's user-unfriendly about MoonShell?

EDIT: I see now. You deleted the real MoonShell installation in favor of the Codejunkie's version. Not a very good idea...

EDIT #2: Wow. The Codejunkie's version is v1.1. GET RID OF THAT CRAP

The navigation is not very user-friendly and one has to know how start it (with moonshell.nds ) !

Why is that Not a very good idea ??

I don't see any difference with or without MoonShell Version 1.6 (stable)
, or perhaps there is also some file to start in order to use it ???

I use the last version 1.22 (http://us.codejunkies.com/mpds/binaries/startup_122.zip) !!

OK. The version of MoonShell that Datel provides (they call it 1.22) is MoonShell v1.1. Its file is "MoonShell.nds". The newest version of MoonShell is 1.6. USE THAT INSTEAD OF DATEL'S. There will be a file on the root of your card after installing, called MoonShell(Max Media).nds or something like that, move it to the folder where Datel's MoonShell is and delete the Datel one.

If this went over your head, tell me and I'll give you a RAR archive with the files in the right way.

Moonshell assumes that you know how to launch DS programs. If you consider Moonshell user-unfriendly, then do you consider all DS homebrew user-unfriendly?

I agree with chuckstudios though. Use the newer version of Moonshell for better performance and more features. To do this, you need to delete all Moonshell-related items from your card (the "shell" directory, the .nds file), run the Setup.exe file that comes with the latest version, and then launch the new .nds file that it places on your CF card.

THANK YOU to all of you !!

I have some experience with Computers (Windows) but NO one with Nintendo DS (at the beginning I did not know I had to launch Moonshell !!).

In the root I now have only two files: bootme.nds and MoonShell_MMCF_MOON_Max Media Dock (Compact Flash).nds.
I also have the moonshl (I deleted the MoonShell and the shell directories) directory.

It seems that it works now !

I had the impression Moonshell is user-unfriendly because I had to use the buttons !!

Best regards, Jean-Claude.

I consider the Max Media menu user-unfriendly because it forces you to use the stylus (no d-pad support) and the scrollbar is only on the right side.
