Reading through the threads and articles, I have gotten abit confused about all the terminology. I want to do some NDS programming and test them on a old fat DS. Could anyone tell me what I would need to run homebrew on it?

A SLOT-1 adapter such as R4 will let you run DS programs.
A SLOT-2 card such as SuperCard, CycloDS, or M3 will let you run GBA programs. A SLOT-2 card plus a NoPass card (SuperKey, CycloDS Key, PassCard 3, MK4-mini, MAX Media Launcher) will let you run both GBA programs and DS programs.
These adapters take SD, miniSD, or microSD memory depending on the model. You will need appropriate memory cards and a USB memory card writer.

So should I get the SuperCard SD and SuperKey ([URL REMOVED - Read the rules - MOD]) to run both DS and GBA apps? Would I need a burner or something for the Supercard?
Edit: I have read a bit more into it, so I just insert an SD card into the SuperCard, insert it and a NoPass card into the DS, then just launch the DS program?

Correct.

Every store that sells digital cameras sells SD card "burners" that connect to your USB port.

You can use a Slot-1 card Slot-2 card combo, getting better NDS and GBA support, as some Slot-2 NDS support s iffy.

This doesn't apply for homebrew at all, so get lost with this kind of posts.

Which specific titles are you talking about? What DS homebrew works on SLOT-1 cards but doesn't work on a lot of SLOT-2 cards? I would tend to think it's the other way around, as ds.gba-only programs such as TickleGirl and SnezziDS want to be run from 32 MiB of RAM in SLOT-2 address space.

I think that's a typo of SLOT-1.
