DS Flash Equipment > Flashing with archaic GBAMP

#126013 - Banzai8th - Thu Apr 19, 2007 4:58 am

I bought a GBAMP (CF version) when they first came out and have been too stingy to buy anything newer. But my friend just got a M3 Perfect, so I thought I'd flash my DS to get more out of my GBAMP.
I read somewhere that it was better to load the new firmware from the GBA slot instead of the DS slot, but neither of us knows how to get the M3 perfect software to load content from the GBA slot, and I don't know if the GBAMP is too old to support it anyways. So is it possible to flash from the GBAMP and if so how do I do it? And is it even better than just flashing from the M3?

Second, no one seems to talk about the GBAMP anymore, are there any places with info on what emulators/roms/etc it can support and run on a flashed DS?

If you want to flash your DS, you need a NoPass in addition to a slot 2 cart. GBAMP can run pretty much anything, except software that requires extra ram.

If your looking directly for homebrew, I think you will be very happy with your GBA MP (CF), I still use mine just about every day with my DS.. Mostly because I use it to control my MythTV with.. but still.. :)

Once you get ahold of a NoPass device, check out this tutorial which covers updating the GBA MP and touches on installing FlashMe. But you will want to read some FlashMe tutorials (DS-Phat or DS-Lite) as well.

I got it flashed successfully, and it was all going good until I tried to run Chism's GBAMP Firmware Hack, and I accidentally did recovery instead of patch. Now whenever I try to run the GBAMP it shows the standard GBA logo animation, then just goes to a blank screen and does nothing. Did I kill the thing, and if so, is it permanent or is there a way to fix it?

Ouch...I've done that before and the only thing that I could do to fix it was to buy another GBA MP and hot-swap the carts. I'm not sure if there's another fix. You could try removing all files from your card save update.e19 and see if that works.

If you don't want to buy another GBA MP, you might be able to ship it off to another member here on GBAdev. I'm in FL (USA), I'd be happy to fix it for you if you'd like.

Don't worry - I did this before! I managed to fix it...somehow! Sorry I can't be more constructive, but it's late etc ;-)
I do remember I fixed it via the e19 update file though (I think there's a button combo to press)

Stick update.e19 (or .e20) onto the root of your compact flash card. The recovery option basically completely erases the GBAMP firmware, then writes the original 32KiB of boot loader, which has the ability to bootstrap the update onto the card. This way, your card's firmware can be put back to a factory state. You can thank DarkFader for this.

Great, I was able to reupdate and repatch. But now I'm getting a different problem. Whenever I try to run a game, I get the error "SuperCard-CF InterfaceGBA-Booter for GBAMP Multiboot, Preparing *filename*, file open error, Error reading *filename*"

#126159 - chishm - Fri Apr 20, 2007 1:30 pm

I haven't seen that error before. What were you doing or trying to run that caused it?

I was using GBAMP Multiboot, and it gives me the error when I try to run a .gba file.

Are you boot in DS mode? Why would you be trying to run a .gba file? Or is it a .ds.gba file? The GBA MP needs the .nds version of the homebrew if that is the case.

I am in DS mode, I can load .nds files just fine. The .gba files I'm trying to run are things like Tetanus on Drugs, Luminesweeper, and other GBA homebrew games.

When in DS mode, you can't boot *.gba files. To boot them you'll need to boot into standard GBA MP firmware.

Yup, you need to boot the DS in GBA mode. This also limits the GBA homebrew size to ~256k and it has to be compiled in mulit-boot mode.. I believe they are normally named filename.mb.gba.

Take your NoPass out and hold Select+Start while you turn on the power. Then choose Start GBA game. You will see "GAME BOY", "not licensed by Nintendo", and finally the GBAMP menu. Choose "Game" (lower left), and then find your .gba files.

Cool, I did not know about that feature.
My life is now complete, thanks guys!

@Mighty Max/Chishm: Is there any reason why the GBA booter for SuperCard was chosen to be included in /mb_data? Could one alter this to run from the GBAMP and get rid of the message "Cannot read xxx.gba!"?
