Which is better to play compo gba games? and has good support?
#126603 - tepples - Wed Apr 25, 2007 2:46 am
SLOT-1 cards such as R4 (the same thing as M3 DS Simply) have zero GBA support.
Among SLOT-2 SD adapters, M3 Perfect has the best GBA compatibility. To use M3 Perfect in DS mode, you'll need a PassCard 3, Action Replay DS, or other NoPass card.

The M3 Mini SD Perfect or M3 Perfect CF?
#126608 - dantheman - Wed Apr 25, 2007 3:10 am
Whichever one you wish to buy. CF can safely be used in larger capacities, as SD cards larger than 2 GB may or may not work in homebrew equipment, but it sticks out considerably. SD (called "M3 Slim SD") sticks out somewhat, while miniSD sits flush within a DS Phat, the M3 Lite sitting flush within a DS Lite. Go with whichever one you wish to use.

I have both a 1gb CF and a 1gb SD, so get the m3 perfect CF?

The M3 Perfect has no extra usable RAM. The Pro version does.

The M3 CF is the size of a Game Boy Color Game Pak. It sticks out this much from an original DS and even further from a Lite.
Lick: That's backwards.
- M2 (GBA Movie Player): slot-2 adapter, no extra RAM
- M3 Perfect: slot-2 adapter, 32 MB RAM
- M3 Pro: slot-2 adapter, 4 MB RAM, introduced after M3 Perfect as Movie Advance's midrange product
- M3 DS Simply: slot-1 adapter, no extra RAM

So the perfect is the one to get?
#126616 - tepples - Wed Apr 25, 2007 3:24 am
The compo cart is 4 megabytes in size, which is the largest GBA ROM that will run on an M3 Pro. Get the M3 Perfect if you want the most compatibility, as some homebrew games and apps (especially those built around streaming media such as Gleam or Luminesweeper) are bigger than 4 MB.

Yes, one of those two would be the product you want. Personally, I'd go for the SD, simply because it sticks out less, but you can use whichever one you prefer.

I doubt the M3 CF one will be there by the time I sell both GBAMP SD and GBAMP CF considering there's only one left....
So I can run a compo game without going to NDS?, and I can get a multi-booter for M3 Perfect SD ?
#126624 - dantheman - Wed Apr 25, 2007 3:54 am
The compo game is a GBA binary, so you don't need to run it in DS mode, no. And I have no idea what you mean by "multi-booter". It has a file browser where you can launch all of your GBA/DS binaries if that's what you're asking about.
#126645 - Masterofdarkness - Wed Apr 25, 2007 12:19 pm
Yes a file browser..And I'm sure I saw something about moonshell working with it...

Masterofdarkness: most devices have their own menu's.

Thanks for the info, Lick, but I had a GBAMP and you needed to get a multi-booter to actually run multiple games so I didn't know...

Well actually, they are the same exact thing but with different stickers and logos. So buy the cheapest card. If you don't believe me, look it up.

I'm not entirely sure why you believe this.
While the R4 and the M3 DS Simply are basically the same hardware they are not identical. Luckily the R4 is cheaper and anecdotal evidence suggests that it also has better homebrew compatibility.

The other major difference to keep in mind is support. Which site (r4ds.com or m3adapter.com) are you actually able to download updates from?

True, they're not identical, but they are indeed very similar. For instance, with the first batches, you could convert your device from R4 to M3 Simply and back by soldering or desoldering four pads on the PCB. While this was fixed later on, it showed that the basic hardware underneath is nearly identical. The R4 appears to be the original product, which the M3 Team buys and rebrands as the M3 Simply, so getting an R4 is probably cheaper as a result like you said.
