on your site you talk about a compact flash adapter, what exactly does that mean? the pictures look like a prototype ds flash card

Doh... it's just a CompactFlash adapter to be used in the GBA slot. I'm just being a cheap bastard. I could have bought a GBA movie player device. Feel free to donate one to me and I'll add firmware/ndslib support for it :)

You know, I'm tempted, just to see that happen. Too bad I have no money.
Maybe I could start the "buy darkfader a GBA movie player" fund to see some hacking action with that device.
By the way, do you mean DS firmware? At first I thought you were referring to the firmware of the GBA movie player.
#40211 - darkfader - Sat Apr 16, 2005 5:10 am
yeah, DS firmware
#40213 - mustardseed - Sat Apr 16, 2005 6:17 am
you can add support in the ds firmware for the movie adapter so we could run ds code from the movie adapter?
if so, i will donate

It's a pity that I don't have money... (a PAYPAL Account...), I would for sure give you something :/
#40230 - polysign - Sat Apr 16, 2005 1:18 pm
Do you release any tutorial on that CompactFlash Adapter? I would build one my self ;)
Having firmware support for it would be awesome and inexpensive. Such CompactFlash Cards don't cost that much anymore...
#40238 - lambi1982 - Sat Apr 16, 2005 3:39 pm
Darkfader, is this added firmware/ndslib support put onto the CF card prior to running it on the system, that allows it to write into firmware, or is it a modification to the card.

You've got yourself a deal. Tell me how much you need for a GBA movie player and I'll PayPal it to you; on the condition that you add firmware/ndslib support for it.

I don't know which way Darkfader would prefer, but you can get the movieplayer from Lik-Sang for 24.90 USD, shipping costs vary from $6 to $28 depending on how fast you want it. Lik-Sang accepts PayPal, and you might be able to have them deliver it directly to his address, found on the info page of his website.

Sure I have heard of donations... for starving children or environmental disasters... but for this...

What a sad state society is in when an honest bloke can't even give a few quid to someone to get them started on something useful in life :)
I don't contirbute much to the gba/ds dev community. I read the newsgroups, I download the devkits, I read the tutorials, I use the tools (like map editors), and I test on the emulators. I wouldn't be able to do any gba/ds development if people like darkfader didn't work out how it could be done and others explained it and wrote tools for it.
And what have I given in return? Well I might have answered a couple of basic C/C++ questions on the forums...
US$30 isn't that much to me. Once you convert it into British Pounds, and then into London beer tokens, you get about 4 pints of Hoegaarden.
I probably should have just given a donation quietly without showboating in the forum. However now I've brought attention to myself I'd like to use the opportunity to urge others to donate a couple of beer tokens to the guys doing the hard work creating hardware, wifi hacks, tutorials, emulators, devkits, etc etc. Especially anyone whose first response to tim's wifi hacking was "now write a driver for my card" - *frown*.

Maybe. But as a high school student with no job, I don't have much money to donate, and I think it's great to see someone (i.e. you), making a donation. Besides, it was requested on the forums, and that's where you dealt with it.
Personally, a homebrew firmware upgrade is the upcoming possibility that excites me most right now. I also have a movieplayer, and want to see some DS support for it. Anything that brings firmware/general DS support for the movieplayer closer is fine with me, even if it comes off as showboating.
Personally, I found your post saying you'd donated to be encouraging rather than show-offish.

Darkfader, figure out what this whole Crystal Engine thin is on the www.movieadvance.com website, its a new thing soon for the Movie player and DS

Probably new codec in the form of a firmware and software update.

Sorry if I hurt your feelings mtg101, I certainly don't want to tell you what to spend your money on. I'm not saying that darkfader doesn't deserve some cash for what he does, I guess I'm just a little sick of everyone sucking [up to him] like he is the only person making any progress with the DS.

Hmm.. Interesting.. So what you have done for the DS dev scene that you didn't get credit for?
#40477 - dagamer34 - Tue Apr 19, 2005 5:16 am
I don't think anyone has really missed out on their duly deserved credit.
I'm sure if you really wanted to, someone could make a list of all the people who have actively contributed to the DS devving scene and brought us to where we now.

OK, just so this doesn't go into a deep shitfight for no reason:
I offer my deepest apologies to everyone everywhere for everything. While I fully intended to use offensive language for the extra impact, I'm sorry I did not think it through. I simply cannot believe that people are donating money to anyone for this, it is not a personal attack at darkfader - he has always done good work. As for what I have done, truthfully not a lot. I as always have several things on the go, but nothing amazing really. In particular though, absolutely none of the things I am working on can lead in any way to piracy on the DS, so nobody has paid any attention when I have mentioned them.
Regardless, I know I can't say "I'm out of this conversation, sorry I ever joined it" and expect that to be that, but it's the jist of what I am saying.

Some people don't live day-to-day, on minimum wage, supporting a wife, child, mortgage etc. Some people have $$$, you know those big green papery wafers of joy, so why not throw it around where it might help the dev com. ? Seems perfectly ok to me. Ok, so you don't have much money, that's a shame, but just cos you don't have any don't mean other's round here don't.
P.S Can I have some money?

I think it wouldnt hurt if everyone sent some money to people who have spent lots of their time working on projects for the DS. Hey, just like Darkfader if more of the people working on it added donation links to a site people would pay.
any updates on your Home made CF flash card thing-a-ma-bob ?

Since the GBA movie player can play GBA roms ( under 256k) with the e16 and above updates, is it possible to redirect the rom to the DS's 4MB?

Three reasons why commercial GBA games won't run from Nintendo DS main RAM: - DS EWRAM is 4 MiB, mapped to 0x02000000-0x023FFFFF. GBA Game Pak ROM of a 32 Mbit cart is 4 MiB, but mapped to 0x08000000-0x083FFFFF. The program will jump into unmapped space or crash at the first long jump.
- Programs running in GBA mode can see only the first (or last?) 256 KB of DS EWRAM.
- Writes to EWRAM would overwrite the program.

I am just wondering, a smaller rom runs with no problem ( *.gba) just thought there might be a way since they run just fine off a GBA FLASH CART in GBA mode.

I found out that the Crystal engine wasn't the DS update, the folks at Movieadvance.com are still working on the DS firmware upgrade and the Crystal engine was just a regular update

So, has any information been found out about how to access the Movie Player? I've found that trying to access the movie player's cartridge space from a multiboot program somtimes has the strange side-effect of booting up the movie player.
