# SC Kernel software V1.50( for NDS & PassMe,copy it to CF,and run it on NDS) (2005.8.6 update)

Any reviews from supercard users on playing NDS demo's/backups with *me?

yeah, if this works out, I'll be interested in gatting the sd version

SD version starts up slower if you did not know... also they cost abit more and SD cards are more expensive then CF cards.

How much slower?

CompactFlash uses ATA, a 16-bit bus. SD Card uses SPI, a 1-bit bus. Unless SPI on SD cards runs at 16 times the frequency of ATA on CF cards, SD is going to be slower.

Hi-Speed SD cards also support a 4-bit mode with 25MHz clock. This gives a 12.5 MB/s transfer rate. Then again, the Supercard guys haven't probably bothered with it...

(Actually SD cards have 3 modes in total: SPI, 1-bit mode and 4-bit mode)

Update(2005.07.07):NDS firmware 1.50 and SC software 2.40 released
# Support NDS comercial roms and homebrew, but only support SC special comercial ROMS.
# Support both GBA mode and NDS mode, if you have PASSME or SuperPass, there is a NDS mode menu on up screen, and a SuperCard logo on down screen. Both GBA games and NDS games will list on the menu.
# GBA support like before, only list GBA games without PASSME or SuperPass.
# 1.50 firmware for GBA games should be used with SC software 2.40.
# NDS roms and demo do not need to covert.
# NDS Patch Program is in programming, clear roms can be coverted by user.

Thread on trying out the new firmware with *me, and several NDS cards in the passme on unofficial supercard forum here.
Seems Supercard only runs NDS stuff with passme, but also (pre)patched backups.

CF runs at up to 16 MB per second, same as GBA ROM (but seeking on NAND flash such as CF is slower than seeking on NOR flash or mask ROM), and the home page of the CF web site currently states that the new 3.0 standard adds UDMA to go to 66 MB per second.

Especially given that there are no subsisting essential patents on ATA or SPI but lots of patents on the rest of the SD card standard.

I thought Super Card and GBAMP could only accept CF versions 1 and some of the 2nd versions... Also buying SD will not make a huge difference then the CF version of the SC. The only disadvantage of the SD SC is that it boots the game around 1-2 second slower. That aint much of a disadvantage but in future games, you never know, we might need higher spec CF.

There's a difference between CF type and CF version. CF type states how thick a card is and how much current it draws (flash is generally type 1 and Microdrive is generally type 2); CF version states which protocols it supports.

Also, though the TRANSFER time between storage (SD card) and ram on the SD supercard may be slower than the CF version,

the function of the card during gameplay is better. They use an improved PCB, and the slowdown is less apparent.
