Gutted! I had a feeling this would happen. Clearly Nintendo are worried about piracy, it's a real swizz that us homebrewers get caught up in all of it.

I think we need to get a better understanding of how to tell which ones have updated firmware. The reason I ask, is the "rumor" is ones starting with NU12 and later.. Well, is later NU40 and NU41? As, I personally know it works fine on those SNs.. Now, I searched all over the Chicago suburbs looking for a DS with an NU12 serial number and all I could find were NU41, NU10, and NU11s.. in both silver and blue.

So, is anyone that is having a problem with a PassMe working, have any of these SNs listed above?

#56216 - cory1492 - Fri Oct 07, 2005 4:42 am

The rumor I had heard was that it was Chinese or Japanese NDS's which started with "NY12", not sure though if NY is in fact one of the Asian serials though. (I do know the Canadian one I had here a while back was NU and the USA one I have here now is NU40)

#56219 - WileEQuixote - Fri Oct 07, 2005 5:28 am

My blue DS also has the new firmware. It was purchased in Canada on Sept. 17th.

It has a NU41 serial number.

Until I read this thread, I thought that the blue units were safe. I got my passkey today, and was very disappointed to discover I've got the wrong firmware. The passkey works fine on my friend's silver DS with a NU40 serial number.

One more thing about serial numbers, my friend's silver DS was purchased very close to launch, and there is a 1 in a box next to the serial number . My new DS has a 8 in the same location. Could this be a revision number?

#56226 - tepples - Fri Oct 07, 2005 7:20 am

PassMe works on my gray DS, purchased in Indiana in late September, which has NU41 serial and [6] in the box.

Well.. This sucks even more.. So, the NUxx number doesn't even matter? I hope my credit card doesn't get flagged as being stolen why I buy a crap load of DSs looking for new firmware.. :(

#56276 - Ilomoga - Fri Oct 07, 2005 3:52 pm

My brother got his blue DS from the Nintendogs pak today and after downloading the WIfime thing the loading screen from Mario 64 DS appeard :-(

What a pity ...

@Ilomoga:

So your brother's DS has the new firmware?

Can you tell us what the first 4 characters of the serial number are? Also, what is the digit in the box next to the serial number?

Thanks.

#56288 - Lynx - Fri Oct 07, 2005 6:01 pm

Oh.. speaking of the number in the box.. I don't know if that matters either, as someone posted that [8] on a new firmware'd machine, and the NU41 that I did ended with an [8] as well.. :(

#56289 - Mighty Max - Fri Oct 07, 2005 6:10 pm

Speaking of serial numbers,

mine doesn't start "NU" ... mine is NEH10... and yes, it's working with wifime & flashme :)

Here's the first 4 of the serial of my silver NDS, bought at launch:

NU70

The number in the box is a 0.

My guess is that the number in the box is a checksum for the serial number. The barcode above the serial number most likely is the serial encoded, with a checksum. The serial number is printed in case the barcode reader can't read it for some reason, requiring the operator to manually enter the serial number and checksum.

The fact that we're seeing inconsistant support of Flashme and Wifime when assuming the number is the firmware version leads me to believe it's just a checksum.

Do you mean the numbers right to the "NEH" (on the sticker on the back)? On my brother's DS they are 1149, but everyone here is talking about NU4x (where can I find that one? Sorry, I'm sure this is a very stupid question ^^)

You've got the right numbers. So you have a blue DS that doesn't work with a serial of:
NEH1149**** [*]

Unfortunately, it looks like the serial number doesn't indicate what version of the firmware you have.

#56311 - tepples - Fri Oct 07, 2005 8:44 pm

Might the FCC ID be helpful, in that each firmware version might need a different FCC ID? Might the firmware copyright date be helpful, given that the "red" firmware was introduced nearly a year after the initial sale of Nintendo DS?

Mine which works has
Model NTR-001, (C)(M)2004 Nintendo, FCC ID BKENTR001, IC: 4360A-NTR001

Tepples, that's the same as mine, which also works.. So, what information should be collected to try and see a pattern.. here is what I'm thinking:

Color:
Country:
SN:
Date Purchased (year if you don't remember):
PassMe/WiFiMe Works:
If no,
- Flash Cart used:
- homebrew tested:

I plan to have the "display" page put *'s over the middle of the SN, incase someone cares..

Anything else that might be helpful?

#56641 - Endy - Mon Oct 10, 2005 10:41 am

It appears my Cosmic Blue Nintendogs-pak Australian DS (brought about the 25th of September) is also incompatible. Or at least I sure haven't gotten my passme working yet.

Serial NAH1010....

Gah!

Pattern?

iQue -> new firmware.
Red case -> new firmware.
Nintendogs bundle -> new firmware.

@extrarice:

You might be right, the digit in the box might not be relevant, but I still suspect that it indicates how old the DS is. Your DS, bought at launch, has a [0]. My friend's, bought shortly after launch, has a [1]. My new DS has an [8].

Lynx says he has seen an old firmware DS with an [8], so I guess it isn't an absolute indicator. But I suspect that older units have lower numbers, and you won't get the new firmware if you buy a North American blue or silver DS with a [7] or lower. We don't have enough information to know for sure though.

Unfortunately not. This matches my Friend's old firmware DS, and it also matches my new firmware DS. The only difference that I can see on the labels is the serial number, and the text is a slightly darker shade on my blue new firmware DS.

My Blue DS wasn't part of a bundle, and it has the new firmware.

I bought mine less than a month after launch. it has a [6].

without having bought a passme how would one know what firmware they are using? i just got my blue DS a couple days ago but it has a 3 in the box would that indicate new or old firmware, sorry total newb question i know, but i thought id add it just for anyone else in my situation.

That's the problem.. Currently there is no way to know.. without trying.

I'm guessing SN darkness is only due to them changing the "ink" on the device used to print the SN.

#56735 - gryto - Mon Oct 10, 2005 11:29 pm

So, is it possible to use homebrew with flashme if you have a non passme compatible DS?
Is it know that the firmware is what is preventing the passme from working or is it something else?

now im not a coder or anything, but wouldnt there be a way to pass a kernel version check as homebrew software over wifime? i dont have the coding skills to do such a task, but im pretty sure it can be done, and if not someone please correct me.

No, you can't install flashme without using PassMe or WiFiMe.. So, untill a new FlashMe comes out for this new firmware, it isn't really a choice anyway.

I think both the DS' in the bundle and the one sold since October 7th (blue and pink) have the new firmware ...
You've got a European one, don't you?

On the topic of FlashMe, would DF's serial flasher work to load the older firmware onto the new DS's?

You mean parallel flasher, but yes, that will work :)

And you don't even need PassMe/WifiMe at all if you extract the modified firmware from flashme.nds... I should try that sometime.

Danger Will Robinson!

Re-flashing the firmware is a bit more complicated than that, since the flashme installer also extracts the MAC address, current firmware version, and user settings out of the old firmware.

If you just use a ripped version, you'll end up with either loopy's mac, or more likely, a mac of 00-00-00-00-00-00 or FF's, depending on what he overwrote his MAC address with :D, and no way to know what version you should restore from.

The MAC is at, iirc offset 0x36 in the firmware, and the settings are the last 512 bytes or so, so if you use the parallel port flasher to first read your firmware, then copy the mac and settings over into the rip (and store the original in a safe place, just in case), then you're probably good to go (but I'm not making any promises to that effect).

There may be other additional information copied over by the flashme installer, either ask loopy (PM olimar) or check yourself.

Edit:
Err, actually I just realized that DF's tool may be smarter than a simple reader/writer, and actually do this stuff for you. I haven't looked at it and will defer to someone who has on that matter.

DarkFader seems to mention on his (new) page that ppflash includes the FlashMe firmware.

Looking at his source code, it keeps the MAC setting.

EDIT: Actually it looks like it's just the FlashMe restore code and not the full FW, since fw.bin is only 768 bytes.

then... is possible put flashme or use passme with blue ds?

thanks

#56968 - deufeufeu - Wed Oct 12, 2005 7:07 pm

Just a little summary of some discutions on #dsdev :

Passme issue ) ique passme *should* work with blue and pink, the only problem is that it is Metroid demo dependent. And as you got your blue/pink with a bundle you probably haven't got the Metroid demo.
But how it is dependent : it makes the proc jump to an invalid code located in the metroid demo, this code makes it do a swi to sram and then, let's-a-go. So how can you adapt it for every game ? just find in somegame the same value to jump to, and change the adress of the jump. Straightforward given the fact you can program the passme.

Wifime issue ) This time we've got to do the same thing as for the passme, except the jump will be in the wmb code. For example I send via wifi a modified header and a real signed code like polarium demo for instance. In the header I make it referring to an address poiting to some invalid code in the polarium signed code. This code being the same as in the passme case, a swi to sram.

I've got nothing to test this, the only wifi I got is an airport card on my mac and a netgear wg121... I don't have a passme either, so I'm couting on you for some feedback on this.

#56973 - Ackman - Wed Oct 12, 2005 8:13 pm

i have 2 nds, 1 silver nds with metroid demo and 1 blue.

thanks

I think the only thing wrong is that it shows % now instead of numbers.

#56981 - rumblpak - Wed Oct 12, 2005 9:29 pm

i have a blue DS and i know i need a GBA flash cart that will be compatible with iQue, and im assuming that the Super Card SD will be compatible.
1) am i right in that assumption?
2) if i am, i will order one and test it pending someone make a wifime app that will do it.
i already have wifime setup and tested to work so that wont be a problem, but if someone gets a working app with wifime to get flashme running i will test it, as my warranty for bestbuy covers "faulty hardware" :P

#57058 - rumblpak - Thu Oct 13, 2005 11:19 am

from what ive heard is that flashme does checks on the firmware to make sure its compatible and those checks are stopping it from running on an iQue DS. for those of us that have them, we should wait until a flashme for iQue has been developed.
