We need some consistent DS firmware versioning scheme. I have seen the most recent firmware refered to as "Red Firmware," but I don't think using colors is a good idea for a versioning scheme.
I talked to Loopy (Olimar) and here is the DS firmware versioning he suggested.
v1 (checksum 0x2C7A)
v2 (checksum 0xE0CE)
v3 (checksum 0xBFBA)
v4 (checksum 0xDFC7)
iQue (checksum 0xF96D)
v1-v3 are the original firmware supported by old PassMe/WifiMe
v4 is the firmware of recent DSes that blocks old PassMe and current WifiMe
Checksum is located at offset 0x6 in firmware. Currently there are no methods to find out what firmware you have without first getting DS to boot in DS mode and running a checker.
FlashMe now works with v1-v4. So far, only an iQue-PassMe or PassMe2 can boot a v4 DS.

And "iQue" is v4 including a Han ideographic font, right? Has anybody figured out what the extra data in the iQue firmware is used for?
"No methods"... Don't some versions fade in the backlight whilst others just turn it on?

Will there be a noflashme.nds file for each of these firmware so that we can restore any firmware we choose?

I thought fading backlight was a flashme thing. Didn't know any offical firmware did it.

Where did you order it from?
Chances are it's a new firmware revision.

Well, we have different DSes, the silver DS, the iQue and perhaps some newer DS will be different in some aspects too. So i suggest a sheme, where you can see for what DS it is.
Sv1
Sv2
etc. for the silver/first/normal DSes
Iv1
Iv2
etc. for the iQue and compatible DSes
btw. I heared, that some new colored DS could be different (colored DS in Europe). Is this verified? I saw some blue and pink DSes in Germany, but i wont spend 130? to test this ;-)

I just got a silver DS replacement from Nintendo (My speakers went out) and it seems to have the new firmware.

So it mean's that you can't use your passme anymore?
or/and you can't update your firmware?

Right, I can no longer use my Super Pass. I'll go back to beating Mario 64 for now.

but as i heard superpass isn't good at al.

Nothing wrong with the Superpass, nice cheap bit of kit.
They did set the code protect bit in the header tho, to try and hide the fact it's a complete clone of the passme.

So about the Nintendogs packed Teal DS: Does it have the same protection scheme as the red DS? This would be helpful to know for people who want to get one...
#58885 - tepples - Wed Oct 26, 2005 11:27 pm
The Nintendogs bundles have the same v4 firmware used in the red DS.

I have a passme(1). It works in two Nintendo DS systems that my younger relatives got for Jesus's birthday. So the old firmware is still in circulation at least in Fort Wayne, IN. (I'll put them in the dspassme.com registry once I get a chance to look at their serial numbers.)

I bought a silver DS in germany two weeks ago, which probably has the new firmware too. No wifime / flashme methods worked so far, damn it ...

What are the differences in all of these versions?
And what are the chances of having a noflashme.nds file for each of these versions?

MaHe found a method to tell which firmware is on the DS. http://forum.gbadev.org/viewtopic.php?t=7961 -Basically, you have to have a DS game card or GBA game pak inserted. you then enter into pictochat. At this point, you remove your game card/game pak. (both cause their related interrupt events).
Olimar/Loopy was able to test this for all firmware versions, as he has dumps for all of them.

Very interesting. I tried it myself, and my results are consistent with most everyone else.
v1: hang
v2: blue
v3: green
v4: yellow
flashme: green (flashme is based on v3, so no surprise there)
ique: green
Looks to me like a reliable detection method. |

I knew that, but i was wondering what the differences between all of the versions were. Is it just bug fixes and then the PassMe blocker? Or are there different functions, quicker response times, better inbuilt functions or anything?
