DS Flash Equipment > Unbrick DS with SuperCard? [solved]

#66917 - niemand - Sat Jan 14, 2006 11:58 am

Hi Folks,

I have read http://wiki.pocketheaven.com/DS_Bricker, which says that I need a "Flash Cart" with the flashme firmware on it.
But the only thing I have is a working SuperCard (working verified on a GBA) and a PassMe v.1.5. I had flashme already running on my DS before it bricked.

Although I don't really know if it is really bricked. Symptoms are, that the green light goes on when I press the power button, but the screens remain blank, no backlight, green light keeps on. A+B+X+Y does not start the SuperCard menu, when powering on.

How to unbrick with a SuperCard?

Thanks

Try using A+B+Select+Start, which as far as I know is similar to A+B+X+Y except for two things:
  • it's checked for earlier, meaning it'll work even when the firmware is bricked; and
  • it doesn't initialize as much of the DS hardware, so some programs might not work.

Put Flashme as the only thing on your flash card, and boot with A+B+Select+Start. After it stops responding, mash A a few times, and flashme should load. From there, reflash.

How did it get bricked? If it was one of those viruses, I think they brick the Supercard too. :-/

I don't really know if it is because of the firmware. Maybe it is defective hardware, I can't say. But I definitely tried a new commercial game (which ran quite well, indeed). After that one my NDS did not turn on again.

How can you distinguish between firmware corruption and device failure?

Usually, actual hardware damage = the power LED turns off immediately, corrupted firmware = just a pair of white screens on startup. What game was it? If it was a WFC game and you used an old version of FlashMe, that happens, you need a new version. You can just use the recovery code to install it.

You played Mario Kart with a version of FlashMe before v5, didn't you?

No, it was another game, and I am using FlashMe which I installed September 2005 (So I guess <verion5 ?)

Mine is in between, LED keeps on, the screens show no sign at all (blank, no light, not white)

I just searched this forum again and found this topic:
http://forum.gbadev.org/viewtopic.php?t=7197
Which says, that it is not possible to recover from SuperCard because of the SuperCard's menu. I guess, I need something else to flash.
But my concern still is, if it is really just a broken firmware and not a broken device...

What is a WFC game?

#67533 - m2pt5 - Wed Jan 18, 2006 9:30 pm

Wi-Fi Connection. Any game that can be played online. (Currently, Mario Kart, Animal Crossing, and Tony Hawk.)

I actually played a WFC game with a flashme version from august or september, so I guess, it is a "old" one.
If the firmware itself is defective, does the DS at least turn on the screens (backlight, white color) or do the screens remain blank?
In this case, is there even a chance to recover?

You can do a "recover install" of Flashme from being WFC bricked in the same way as if you were hit by the bricker. (Put only Flashme on your media, and boot with A+B+Select+Start.)

If it was a WFC issue, the screens will remain dark.

Wow, the hardware is really not bricked. I got my DS running again :-D

I used a Flash2Advance USB Linker cable and flashed it using ucon64 (instead of the "PowerWriter" Windows software). Using ucon64 (Linux version!!! Windows version does not support USB, yet) made it possible to write the flashme.nds without any GUI in front of it.
I used the command
Code:
ucon64 -xf2a -port=usb flashme.nds

to write the working flashme onto the Flash2Advance flash card.

Thanks guys for your help!
