DS Flash Equipment > Flashme without using Passme

#73623 - fer - Mon Feb 27, 2006 12:12 am

Is there any way to use my laptop's Wi-Fi card to install flashme? I would really like to avoid buying a passme. Please don't refer me to the "flash equipment meetups" topic either i have already explored the option of using someone else's passme to flash my ds.

Only if it has a Ralink chipset. Also, you need to have a flashcart to install FlashMe from.

If you're good with soldering, you can perform PPFlash.
But that's a bit dangerous, because you've got to cut the traces on DS' mainboard ...

Keep in mind that if you have new firmware (V5+) WiFiMe doesn't work, and the only options are ppflash or PassMe2.

i'm not very good with soldering mahe but thanks. i'm pretty sure i have firmware v4 or less, my screen turns green when i do that test. All i want to do is run nes and snes emulators both capable of having multiple roms inserted in them. its lookin like this is gonna set me back at least $70 though, are there any predictions as to the future of homebrew and if its gonna get any easier and/or cheaper to pull this off?

So does GBA homebrew.

Green screen is FW3 (or you already have FlashMe ;-)). Also you can get a GBAMP for about $25, 16-32MB CF card for probably $10-20, and compatible wifi card for $20.

#73781 - fer - Tue Feb 28, 2006 2:30 am

55 bucks is not outrageous i guess. but from what i've been reading about the nes and snes emulators they're still kinda buggy and most roms don't work that well on them, if i wait a while are things gonna get much better or is this as good as it gets?

NES/SNES DS will probably get better (or have alternatives) eventually... but that's not all you can do!
Look around :)

The majority of popular North American ROMs already work well on PocketNES.

Yeah, if you just want NES, get the GBA MP + CF and your done. No need for DS Specific version really.

#73827 - fer - Tue Feb 28, 2006 7:00 am

wait lynx, are you saying if i wanted to run snes and nes emulators off of a gba mp, and without the use of a passme, i wouldn't need to flash it first?

And how much for the CF writer?

ok so gbamp, a cf card, and a flash writer will cost me at around $60-70, i can deal with that. I just wanna know if i put snes and nes emulators with a bunch of roms inserted on the gbamp do i still have to flash my ds to be able to run them?

#73855 - tepples - Tue Feb 28, 2006 1:32 pm

Can you run emulators in GBA mode? NES, yes. Super NES, no.

NES - No.
SNES - Yes, unless you want to be able to play about 2 games with a ton of glitches and no sound.

What effect does FlashMe have on running SNESDS off of a GBAMP?

ok so to run snesds or any other snes emulator off a gbamp i need to flash my ds first or use a passme every time. you say that pocketnes and nesds run well but looking at sites like this: http://luffy.free.fr/nds/snesds_compat/index.php
it seems like its not even worth getting snesds yet

#74459 - HyperHacker - Sun Mar 05, 2006 8:34 am

No, SnesDS isn't too good yet, but I imagine it'll get a lot better once some timing and rendering bugs are fixed.

Good point. Mine was $20 but I have no idea what an average price, nor the lowest you'll likely find is. (Plus it's 7-in-1.) A lot of storebought computers already have them, though. (And hey, they're useful for other things too. Especially if you get one like mine that can be removed and plugged into another computer's USB port.)
