DS Flash Equipment > Using a GBAMP SD

#81756 - Ky Puppy - Mon May 01, 2006 10:00 pm

Recently bought a 1GB sd card and GBAMP SD is in the mail to arrive anyday now, but I just found out SD is harder to read and write than CF. Was wandering if I'll have a bunch of limitations on what I can do using GBAMP SD compared to a GBAMP CF?

No PocketNES for GBAMP (although compy still works). No Goomba Color for GBAMP (although <=128 KB mono ROMs still work). No other homebrew that loads assets from the flash card after starting. No DS mode.

Oh my...I had no idea. I just wasted my money then. So I have to buy a CF card and a GBAMP CF now. Another question, does CF not have any problems with anything then? Thanks for your help. I wonder if its too late to cancel my GBAMP SD order from Lik-Sang.

Most homebrew is coded with the GBAMPCF (what a mouthfull) in mind.

SD cards are still quite useful. Most digital cameras use them and I've heard the Nintendo Revolution (or "Wii" as they're apparently calling it now <_<) uses them for game downloads.

I know your pain, though, I bought a 1GB SD card (back when they cost way more than they do now) thinking I could use it, but I was wrong. Lucky I didn't buy any SD device. Though if I can, I might buy one anyway later. :-p (And the SD card goes very nice with my camera.)

Although the "prosumer" models are more likely to use CF.

I've read that Wii can also use USB drives, and I happen to have an adapter that turns CF, SD, SmartMedia, and even Memory Stick (PSP memory cards) into a USB drive. Don't most DS developers on this forum have something like that?

I think I have something like that (to use a bunch of different types of memory sticks for usb). On a side note, I don't have a camera or anything that uses SD. Maybe better SD support will show up eventually, I hope.

What exactly are the consequences of this?

"No DS mode" means you can't currently do anything more with it on a DS than you can do on a GBA. No MoonShell, no DSOrganize, no ScummVM, no snesDS.

Wait... I think I'm getting things mixed up here. I'm thinking of the M3. Sorry about that.

But, what would stop the GBAMP SD from being supported?

#82995 - CubeGuy - Thu May 11, 2006 7:33 pm

Chism (or anyone else) deeming it worthy of the time it takes to write a new firmware for.

So can I use this SD version as a DS flash cart at all?

A friend of mine asked recently what flashcard to get - I just said go for GBAMP as it's the cheapest one, only that it he happened to get the SD version...

Chishm or anyone with experience on these issues - what does it take to hack the GBAMP SD to get homebrew running?

A wild guess: the M3SD troutines should work with GBAMP SD, if the register addressed are changed in the same way as the M3 CF Addresses changed.

Someone with a gbamp-sd should create a new driver for it. (First without caring about booting)

The second step should be trivial, as it should just need to compile the firmware again with the sector access functions replaced.

After that you'd be set.
