I didn't run into any problems. I used a small drill bit wrapped in electric tape as the shorting utility (stolen from Aisu's "DS Lite Flashing Journal" post). When FlashMe ran, it said that it didn't recognize the firmware, but I continued anyway.
What you don't see in the pictures is me peeing my pants when I did it.
Comment if you want.

I hope you're not trashing the Passkey2 even after flashing succeeded. Waste of resources, and I'm sure there's always more DS's to flash and friends who need help with that - or if you don't really need it, give it to someone who does.
#86203 - grooverunner - Mon Jun 05, 2006 12:03 pm
I agree with melw. When I flashed my original DS I didn't think I'd ever need the Passkey again and then the DS Lite was released.
I'm sure Nintendo will release another version of the DS before it gets replaced with their next gen handheld and the passkey may still work. The reason I mention this is because I felt Nintendo made it easier to flash the Lite (assuming you insulate your SL1 shorting tool).

I'm not trashing it... it was only for the picture. (I knew everyone here would gasp!)
#86221 - Aisu - Mon Jun 05, 2006 5:29 pm
I'm glad to see that the tool worked for you :). I Was wondering how did you get the ds lite so early? It's not even june 11th yet?

There was a Target that sold them before June 11th... and I was lucky enough to receive one. I'm glad, because it means I got to cash in my gamestop pre-order. Gamestop is the worst. :)

Sucess !!!!
Sorry by my english. Actually i live in Brazil.
Flashed my japanese DS Lite. Thanks for the advice.
The first time I used a nail covered by an isolant tape. Didn't work. The bar remained in 0%.
The second time, got a paper clips. Isolated it, but again, didn't works (remained in 0%).
The third time, got a tin foil, covered the tip of the clips and isolated the sides. What a beautiful scene!!! The bar reaches 100% in a few seconds.
By the way, when I started flashme me, it showed me the following message: "warning - your firmware is not recognized. If you continue, it may not be possible to restore your firmware to its original state. Push start to continue anyway".
There are some information in the web, saying that with flashme+dslite the brightness adjust is lost, but it isn't true, with the version 7 (526KB file) it works exactly like the original.
Thanks.

brightness adjustment works fine with flashme v7. I probably wouldn't have done it otherwise.

Google still brings up a lot of stuff from when the DS Lite first came out (before Flashme 7) and back then that was the truth. Version 7 added brightness adjustment.

oh ok. I was wondering is the brightness adjustment feature controlled by a special program or can you just tap the button in the bottom left for the brightness to be adjusted?

is the hole where you short the SL1 big enough where i can cut the end of a McDonalds sized straw, stick it in the hole, so that the surroundings is blocked by the straw, revealing only the SL1?
or do i need a really small straw? :P
(is this a good idea?)

sounds like a great idea imo, though i'm sure tape would be just as easy...
(no idea if a straw would fit)
#86409 - slinker - Tue Jun 06, 2006 11:21 pm
A straw would be too big. The hole is really small. Especially a McDonalds straw... they're twice as thick as anywhere else!

I was going to do this with some paper, but the hole is too small. It's even too small to use a matchstick as the shorting tool.
#86412 - thundrestrike - Tue Jun 06, 2006 11:31 pm
what would you recommend using to flash it?
please provide pictures, or an in-depth discription
I need to know the best way to do it, once I get it
(lol im selling my runescape account on ebay to get enough money to buy it, I already got a bid for 100 bucks and its still got 2 days left. Im going to get at least 160 bucks from it ;D)Probably the best way to get money for the DS lite right there :D!

when you say turn it off do you mean adjust the levels of brightness or just turn the system on and off with the bottom left button?

With flashme V7 and DS LITE the light function works identical as the original (not flashed) DS LITE.
You may adjust the brightness levels... Actually, in LITE you don't have the possibility to disable the light (as you have in normal DS - the old ones), only the possibility to choose from 4 brightness levels. Even the lower level has the light on.
In fact, I didn't know why you have the possibility to disable the light in old DS. When you do that you can't see anything, it's too dark.
#86519 - HyperHacker - Wed Jun 07, 2006 6:13 pm
Hey, if you can't disable it on Lite, then what about on the older models that have the adjustable lights? Does the firmware not have an option to turn it off?

Is the DS LITE backlight controlled by the same register as the normal DS backlight? I don't have a DS Lite and I never plan to have one, but some people might want to use FWNITRO with a DS Lite, and I have to make the backlight option to work correctly if used on a DS Lite.
And, you can see something on the old DS if there is other light in the room. Outside in a sunny day you can see it just as good as if the backlight is on, in a room in your house it may be able to see but very dark. In a dark room, you can see nothing without the backlight. It is probably useful to turn off the backlight to save power.

I read somewhere that in order to change the brightness settings with flashme you have to use a program named ALITE, and that you can not change the backlight settings through the normal unflashed method. Is this true for v7?

Flashme7 on the US DS Lite, makes it work exactly the same as normal. You use the icon in the menu to change the brightness setting.
#86624 - jas20 - Thu Jun 08, 2006 11:10 am
Some games (such as Super Mario) can turn the backlight off. What happens when you do this on a lite?
#86981 - slinker - Sun Jun 11, 2006 4:38 am
I just ran Yoshi's Touch and Go, and used the backlight on/off button, and it turned the backlight on and off, like the old ds's. It did not cycle through the different brightnesses.
#87082 - RueGorE - Sun Jun 11, 2006 9:31 pm
I just flashed my DS Lite today with flashme v7 and now I only have one brightness setting with ON or OFF, just like the old DS. :(

Does anyone have a link to obtain the proper DS Lite version?
Update: I visited this site (http://mirrors.kicks-ass.net/mirrors/ds.gcdev.com/dsfirmware/) and downloaded the firmwares and checked their hashes.

MD5: 2E6071CA4602FABB7065BA50D32470DD flashme_stealth.nds
flashme.nds is the same as what I had, but the stealth version is different. Can anyone confirm and help?
Last update: Well it seems I fixed my own problem. Through some digging, I found this link (http://mobiles.gx-mod.com/modules/mydownloads/visit.php?lid=1700) which had differently sized firmwares and hashes.

MD5: D4521D1F86232D11EE63562393B630F9 flashme_stealth.nds
These are twice the size as the ones I had (538,185 bytes vs 276,041 bytes) and are compatible with DS Lite. I have my 4 levels of brightness back! Sorry for bothering anybody.
