Open your windows Notepad.

Write:
easy toy toy games

And save it with any name.
Close Notepad.
Open the file that you just saved.. what the hell? Chinese text.. what does it mean? A secret message from microsofts chinese coder? You tell me.

ha ha thats weird :-)

#89112 - tepples - Fri Jun 23, 2006 3:35 am

Under win2k, also works with
  • Pino ate the pasta
  • Bush hid the facts
  • Game boy the worst
  • that was way weird

Does NOT work with
  • Pino ate the pizza
  • Bush hid the truth

It's based on guessing the character encoding of a text block, and it often guesses wrong (UTF-16 instead of local 8-bit codepage) on short strings with words of 4, 3, 3, and 5 letters not followed by a newline. More info

This debate begs the question as to how this was all discovered.

"Begs the question"? You mean "raises the question", amirite?

Begging the question is something else entirely (circular logic).

This little trick has caused quite a stir among /.ers and other tech websites.
It's simply because the notepad engine can't differentiate between the encodings (i forget which ones in particular) and gets it wrong.
On machines without the japanese/chinese character sets installed it just displays boxes.

This is unlikely to happen with larger text samples.

it also works with this:

asdf afd asd asdfg

it works with the pattern of 4, 3, 3, and 5. simple as that. there is no message

#89332 - JaJa - Sat Jun 24, 2006 9:31 am

Not all 4-3-3-5 patterns work.
They must be a valid string in the other encoding for it to work.
Look around on Google.
