I recently got a good ol' N64, and I thought it might be fun to do homebrew on it.
So, was homebrew ever actually done on the N64?
Links please :)

I don't think any full games or apps were made for N64 homebrew, but Zophar's lists at least a couple demos.

Was not the N64 super hard to develop for? Why would anyone want to homebrew on it? =)

As I understand a lot of people wanted MP3 and DVD player apps for it (I guess they planned to do some hardware hacking?), so I suppose it was mainly in the hopes of using it as a media center. There was pretty much no homebrew for it at all, though.

The N64 had a programmable graphics card!!! I'd want to code for the N64 just to turn off it's mip-mapping; and write action replay cheats to turn off their ghastly effects.

Hm, that's an interesting thought. Hacking the RSP code via Gameshark... It may take a giant code to do, though. I'm not sure if it stores that stuff in main RAM or not.

There were some people, which made some demos for the N64. Most of the source of that you can find on http://dextrose.com/.
But most of the demos are based on the official Development Kit from Nintendo. If you search with google you can surely find it.
But you can also try some of the free assemblers or a GNU based MIPS C-Compiler. But without the official librarys it's almost impossible to get some 3D stuff working.
You can find some informations about Backup Systems here. http://n64.icequake.net/
And an Assembler here. http://hcs64.com/n64info.html
