#129981 - theli - Tue May 29, 2007 8:18 pm

and that is certainly coming from forum.gbadev.org .... not from proxy or something similar ....
now i need to use web anonymizer to access forum ;(

Odd!

#130033 - theli - Wed May 30, 2007 10:13 am

sooo ... maybe it is a banned ip problem?
can anyone with powers look if 194.30.163.206 is banned? :(

#130064 - SimonB - Wed May 30, 2007 5:50 pm

Yes, that IP is banned. The kind of automated connections that were coming from that IP are not allowed on this site.

#130066 - theli - Wed May 30, 2007 6:37 pm

erm ... i had an auto-refresh every 5 or so minutes in firefox to keep track of new posts
that is abandoned?

if so, sorry i won't do this again. can you, please, unban that ip?

#130082 - tepples - Wed May 30, 2007 9:07 pm

Do you want to keep track of new posts in specific topics? You can subscribe to a topic, and phpBB will send the URL of each new post to your e-mail address. Then you can use whatever kinds of notification your e-mail client offers.

Or do you want to keep track of new posts on the whole site?

You really don't need to do that; phpbb keeps track of what you have and haven't read in a session. It's not perfect, but only in the sense that if someone posts before you've logged out then it will not appear as a new posts. But that's never a worry with the volume of posts on this site, in fact I never need to log out or "keep track"

i'm not saying i really 'need' it :)
i just had no idea that such behavior can lead to ip ban :)
its just a convenient way for me to see are there any new posts in forums i'm interested in... like .... i'm working ... pop firefox window .. see there are no new posts in "ds development".. and continue to work :D

anyway ... as i said i won't do this again if it is prohibited

#130152 - keldon - Thu May 31, 2007 10:35 am

Is a 5-minute auto refresh really the cause of it? I doubt it very much to be honest!

#130160 - theli - Thu May 31, 2007 11:21 am

i didn't think so too ...
but that what it seems to be :(

Unlikely because normal use has far more reads per minute than once every 5 minutes. Maybe there was more going on, could you have a bad bot on your computer that is pretending to be an auto refresh but is in fact a common robot constantly pruning the site for email addresses?

Either way there has to be more; maybe you're sharing an IP address with an evil bot or something.

#130174 - theli - Thu May 31, 2007 2:00 pm

doubtly ....

and i just rechecked squid's logs.... noone except me was accessing forum.gbadev.org

But does normal use pull pages at regular intervals for 12 straight hours?

Well that would be the point where you should reconsider your internet activities and possibly seek some anonymous therapy. But really I doubt any trouble would be caused by a 5-minute auto refresh of the main forum page. Though it is 144 views per 12 hour stint (assuming that he goes for 12 hours at a time), which does sound like quite a lot when you look at the figure.

I wounder what method is used to determine to ban IPs.. It's normally very easy to determine if an IP is reading a single page, or scanning the whole site. Not only will it show page hits but you will see large file size downloads as well. If someone is just refreshing a page with one image that is 6.54kb, I don't think it would show up like a site scanner that would show it downloading all the images and any files available.

So, the real question is bandwidth. How much bandwidth are you pulling from the server. If it's enough for an admin to ban your IP, then whatever you are doing isn't a good idea, as bandwidth = money.

yep ... i have gbadev tab open at work and at home ...
when i'm at home right after work that is certainly a possibility :D

edit: i just realized that its not actually possible ...
i'm just 9 hours at work .... at home i have a different ip

that's certainly not possible ....
there really was such situation?

actually i think that firefox not every time downloads all images ... it has a cache for this after all

anyway as i said i switched gbadev autorefresh off and hoping my work ip will be unbanned :(

mmm... i'm just wondering ... if this ban is forever? :(

I will add an option for banned clients to answer a simple question (like when you register on the forum) to be removed from the banned IP list.

Unfortunately with all the unfriendly bots that keep hitting the forum, the tools to keep them out will sometimes block real clients.
