Why not? As I understand it, people who bump old topics with a legit question should be rewarded for using search rather than making a duplicate topic.

Bumping old topics might as well be creating new ones, just that if its a long old topic that I've likely never seen, don't have to take the time to read the original information, or skip to the last page of a longer thread.

Necroposting has the advantage that people who do have the time can more easily find context for a post.

But the disadvantage that most of the new posts are merely meta commentary about whether it's right or wrong to bump, and not actually relevant to the topic at hand. ;P
(Couldn't resist, heh.)

Well at least the meta commentary was confined to its own post, rather than people combining meta commentary with the topic at hand. If they're mixed, no can split.

In the future bumps will be superseded by MUL ^_^

bumps = bad when it's from someone with 2 posts (initial and the bump) and they are asking a stupid question. But, having a conversation about it sin'g going to stop those people anyway.

It's just weird. People talking in 2004 and someone in 2007 joins the conversation... Sci-fi?

Besides, you can just make a new topic and link to the old one.

one could probably do it many ways. Why not just let people use their own judgement instead of yelling at them if they don't use some rule somewhere hidden in the offtopic.

If people were talking in 2007 and someone from 2004 joined the conversation I'd start to get worried...

Amen to that. Besides why create a new one to link to an old when you can just reply in the old one. It all depends on the context, if you've got 20 pages of chat then surely create a new thread and link to the old; if it is just 1-3 pages then post in the old one!

I'm not fussy about how other people handle necroposts. Personally, I'll avoid them, but I won't chastise someone for necroposting.

Digging up an old topic isn't too bad if there's a reason for doing it, but when you get a two-year late message saying "have you tried renaming it to .ds.gba?" that's definately taking the piss.
We've all seen messages like this, so don't pretend you don't know what I'm talking about!

Sure, people should use discretion. (as always) A two year late "have you tried renaming it to .ds.gba?" is a fantastic way to make a fool of yourself.

It almost seems sarcastic, like the advice is really going to help.

I'd assume those are made by mistake. I can't imagine someone is thinking.. after 2 years.. the person hasn't received a valid answer to help with their situation.. and someone is making a conscious decision to respond to a 2 year old thread with obvious information.

I guess on the opposite side from my previous position... I guess the author of the thread (if they are still around) would appreciate further insight on the topic? Especially if it was a question that was largely unresolved.

Well there is always the random chance that your response may send them an email notification, which in turn reawakens their desire to complete that long forgotten project ^_^

bump whatever you like to. that's what i think about it. cross referencing can be as much of a pain as readin through some invalid old stuff. but: topics seem to become old quite fast and stuff often changes within days, so i guess reviving is better than cloning.
take dolly for an example. didn't it die before or at least younger than the original sheep? (don't answer that question, please!)

<offtopic> well, just ask her politely, then bump her gently (when she feels like it). ;^p </offtopic>

Somehow, I didn't think it was his girlfriend he wanted to bump.. ;)
