Yo, it's been mentioned a few times but never discussed fully - would there be any scope for a "could you code this?" forum?
Stuff which would go in it:
- "I'd like game X ported, but have no programming ability - what's the chances of someone else doing it?"
- "I'm writing a program and need function X - has anyone already written this / I don't know how to write this so can someone write it for me?"
I realise that this is similar to the "help wanted" forum but I think there's a subtle difference, as I've always seen that forum as a "I'm making a project and I'd like an artst". This new forum would be more of a dumping ground for those useless porting requests, but also could be used for more constructive "I need some code" threads.
One advantage of doing this would allow you to put a big fat sticky at the top telling person X what their chances are if they want some closed-source game coded for the DS.
Another would allow people who are submitting these requests to see a) which games have already been considered and b) the response that those threads got, allowing them to properly construct (and punctuate...) a new request.
What do people think of this?

Makes sense!

I like it so far.

I like the idea of requesting code pieces that do x function. Kinda like the code you posted for copying, just a place where you can ask for and give examples of functions and stuff.
I think that port requests that are reasonable (open-source and within DS hardware limits) should stay, but the ridiculous Port-halo-3-and-other-impossible-stuff-to-the-DS-for-me and stuff like that should just be deleted, so the forum will be more helpful to those with reasonable problems.

i don't think threads should be randomly deleted. who would be the one executing this censorship, and how could other users learn from it?
#135873 - keldon - Thu Jul 26, 2007 10:17 pm
Do other users learn from the not-deleted threads?
#135880 - simonjhall - Thu Jul 26, 2007 11:18 pm
Hence putting them all in the same place.
If they live in with the main development forum old porting requests will get pushed off the front few pages pretty quickly (assuming they have no posts), meaning that in about a month's time I reckon we'll be getting a brand new "OMG a N64! emulater would be sooo cool" thread!
Deleting threads like this is definately a bad idea, as people may assume that ideas like this have never been thought of before.
Or even, how about a stickied message saying which things have been requested and links to the appropriate threads where they were considered / squashed.

I think a forum for "Has someone already created this lib/function/code/script/etc ? " would help
a forum for game port requests would just be a madhouse, imo
If this board has (making up numbers here) 100 folks capable of porting games, you'll have 10000 people making port requests
coders are still only going to code the stuff they feel like porting anyway ;)

<lmao!> good one... "never been thought of... n64 emulator on the ds"... <tear drops> wow, that was a good laugh.
well, i find the idea very good, but it should get a better name. this one is pretty general. i think something as tikker has supposed would work better, although his topic is a bit to biased towards "coders only" and leves out the hb requests.
btw: *i* can do halo 3 on ds! i'm a wizzard! i just have to start my magical n64 emulator for nds that has it's own magic bloaty-directx-to-nds convertoratus already build in! it's magic! ;p end-of-crazy-mode

I'm for it, just so I don't have to visit that section. ;) But, I would put a sticky saying that if you don't start the project yourself, and actually get it going.. that there is no point in posting your idea, as nobody is going to do it for you.
How many real original ideas have we seen? The only ones that I know of are the ones that devs already know aren't going to work.. ya'know.. like "Can you port WoW to the DS!!!one!"

Really all I want is a solution to the stupid requests asking for something to be ported. Often they just get ignored or deleted, but it's the ones which drag for ages which just annoy (eg n64 emulation).
So, other than putting them all in one big forum (which you can choose to ignore), but else can this be dealt with?

I can do halo 2 on a PS1 and halo 5 on a Dreamcast. There's a demo of halo 2 for GBA floating around somewhere. I'm still stuck on halo 19; I haven't yet upgraded to halo 24, but I think I can get them both running on the NIŠTENDO DS as DSOrganize plug-ins.

Heh. Kinda funny seeing as Nine Inch Nails did the music for the original Quake... Not too much of a Far Cry from Halo. And the author of this forum ported Quake to DS... My head is spinning.
Anyway I think generally its a good idea, and there could be two stickied topics, one for requests already made, and who made them, and the other explaining the probability of someones port request being coded. (Stuff like making sure the source is open, and that the original system requirements aren't too demanding, etc.)

Once again I think we need a big fat sticky to draw the attention of people who want games made. Anyone want to do it, I shall I write it?

Please add a quote of the "Flipcode Team Wanted"-form point 2. You can find it quoted by your's truly in this thread: http://forum.gbadev.org/viewtopic.php?t=8922

This is such an ace post :-)
Although I'm kinda scared by the "I don't need any programmers, I have a book that will teach me C++ in 21 days." one as that's how I learnt with to program C!
EDIT: added in :-D

"For Dummies", "Complete Idiot's Guide", "In 21 Days", and "In 24 Hours" books are good introductions to a field, but they teach people just enough to be dangerous. I should know; I learned C and HTML from For Dummies books and C++ from a 21 Days book, and I needed other references to actually make me effective in these languages. This week, I'm working through Scott Meyers' Effective C++ and More Effective C++ on a tip from someone on #dsdev so that I can understand the C++ language without the interference of bullschildt.

I really want to say a sticky is a good idea, especially that one you wrote up, but I still think people will just bypass it and post without reading it.
