Does anyone know what software is used when creating (formatting) a computer architecture book that contains block diagrams for system layout and/or logic layout diagrams.
Examples of what I would like to create:
Diagrams like this(doesn't have to be color)

and

and like this:

Free if possible.

The best tool I know for this kind of drawings is Microsoft VISIO. I've also used OpenOffice for those, but it's somewhat more awkward to use.

I have used the "Inkscape" SVG editor.

I actually have Inkscape. I didn't realize that these generic programs were used for this. I figured it would be more specialized software.

I can think for a few that are not free to use but their diagrams doesn't look like the diagrams you are showing.
The last diagram example looks like exported from Dia http://www.gnome.org/projects/dia/
I'm using this software sometimes if I need some UML diagrams. I'm recomending it.

Thanks. Inkscape works, but isn't that easy to use. I like Dia, but has anyone used kivio? I guess you can only use it with the KDE though.
