OffTopic > Spell Check?

#159374 - sgeos - Sun Jun 29, 2008 9:30 pm

So far as I can tell, there is no way to spell check posts directly in this forum. If I am mistaken, please tell me where the spellcheck button is. Otherwise, is there any chance a spellcheck plugin could be installed?

^^ I use this firefox plugin. I wouldn't be surprised if there were some with grammar checking too (although it might be a bit naff for forum posts).

Thank you for the information.

The firefox plugin is fine, but it is not a direct solution. I have no guarantee what software is going to be installed on any particular box I happen to be using, so personally I would like to forum plugin istalled, if at all possible. (This has the added benefit of making poor spelling completely inexcusable.)

this->doPost(new CPost(text, new CTypo[10 + random(A_LOT)]));

...

foreach(this->post->get(TYPOS), currentTypo)
    this->post->edit(currentTypo->correct());

I don't need no goddamn spell checker.

I generally get really annoyed at spell checkers. Mainly because, as a programmer, doing mostly technical stuff, there are tons of words that it thinks are misspelled. And since I tend to have pretty decent spelling, usually the majority of words that are marked are marked incorrectly, which just annoys me.

Compulsory spell check is definitely evil, but I do not see how being given an unobtrusive option to spell check something would be annoying. You can always fail to use it.

That I will agree with. Now what I really need is a spell-checker that reads my mind, and knows whether I'm misspelling something, or whether I'm spelling a word that doesn't exist ;-)

Google? That is how I deal with low confidence words.

Crepe an mine, spill chick doze note yelp f yew fuse thee wring ward. You need to proof read for that. =P (Botched every word in the first sentence and it passes the spell and grammar check in MS Word.)

As do I. The problem comes in on the odd words that I think I'm spelling correctly, but which I chronically misspell.

Dictionary.com? It may not be helpful if you use wildly strange words. For what it is worth, my pharmacist friend no longer uses spell check because none of the spellcheck dictionaries have the jargon he uses.

I found out that spell checker seems to limit my abilities to cast weird spells...
