OffTopic > Still coding on the DS(i)?

#177109 - sverx - Mon Dec 12, 2011 4:50 pm

I just didn't want to relaunch the "What's everyone up to now?", that would have been a 2nd reprise... so I'm asking if you're still coding on the DS/DSi, and what exactly -if you can tell us-

Your turn now :)

Nintendo is now dead to me. On to Apple stuff now, and wow is it easier to do useful work with. Nintendo should takes notes...

#177114 - ritz - Mon Dec 12, 2011 7:55 pm

I really want to start something again (or continue my old tech demo) but I just can't seem to find time. Stupid work, etc. I did, however, make some custom RSS feed thingies so that I could keep up with what's going on here.

Perhaps people have missed it, but I'm working on a DS operating system called FeOS.

#177117 - Azenris - Tue Dec 13, 2011 12:32 pm

I'm considering a sequel to my Red Temple NDS game for the NDS. So yea, still on the DS!

I still have a half-finished pacman game lying here. and I am thinking of creating a dstti debricker (because mine got bricked :/ ). But I am currently to busy with school to focus on homebrew projects. I've entered the codecup contest (codecup.nl) with some other students as a school project, which is really fun. After that, I'll probably move along to other stuff.

I'm still playing around with the GBA occasionally. In 2011, I participated in the release of two GBA demos:

True Lessons from Real Life
Shake Your Lawnmower

Neither were very serious, but both were great fun to make! :)

#177234 - sgeos - Wed Feb 01, 2012 6:00 am

Closest thing to gbadev I've done recently is play around with Famitracker. Good stuff.

I'm doing iOS development. I want to move to an open source CC0 (public domain) business model. (Disorganized GitHub repository here. Test app here for a few more weeks.)

New twin boys get out of the hospital next week.

Well I'm working on a 3ds title at the moment, and also a html5/canvas micro-game I think will be pretty cool :)

Done a little light travelling too, visiting the Netherlands and Germany for a short stay, mostly to escape my routine just enough to refresh my creative flow of energy and to recharge (as I've not had a break for the better part of 3 years).

Congrats! Twins are a ton of work at the beginning, but it gets easier and more fun as you go. Ours just turned 4, it's WAY easier now.

....

You guys are all brave doing iOS development. I quit when Apple changed their rules one too many time while I was working on my project. Wasn't worth the risk of them deciding not to allow my app.

I haven't really been doing any game-related stuff, although I'd like to. I just haven't had any luck finding an artist. I've got a couple projects (a blaster master spinoff, and a kids game) in the back of my brain, but they both need art.

#177286 - headspin - Tue Mar 13, 2012 1:25 am

gauauu what rule change did Apple make that made you think your app would be rejected?

If you're looking for an artist, some places to look:

I don't remember the exact language, but they had a clause for awhile disallowing 3rd party cross-platform compatibility libraries/toolkits. (It was a couple years ago when they were battling with Adobe about flash). I read through that section of the agreement about 10 times, and was still unsure whether the library I was using qualified. (it seemed that I would most likely be allowed, but it wasn't clear cut -- the maker of the library had made a statement of "Apple's new agreement might sound like they won't allow our library, but we're pretty sure they will". Not enough to really give me confidence)

That's when I realized that, whether or not it was allowed, I didn't want to contribute to a system that tightly controlled what I was allowed to write.

Oh, and thanks for the artist links!

Not a lot of posts are made on this forum anymore; I come to check after not being on for 2 months to see only a handful of new comments. Makes me sad.

Anyway, I'm working on and off on my game creator app (an expansion/addition to my earlier level editor). So far I've got the level editor, obviously, and a sprite editor. Now all I need to do is make a game editor. Should be easy enough.

In the meantime I've been making some minor changes to DSLiero (and made a new release back in February that seems to have gone unnoticed ninja-style). Still want to add multiplayer. Damn the lack of reliable (local) networking libs!

I made a DS version of the 'Mole in the Hole' boardgame that I never released. Having already released a Labyrinth knockoff, I didn't want to step on anyone's toes releasing another one of their boardgames for free :p

Other than that I'm aching to do some DS devving, but I just don't have any ideas for games.

True, very few posts and less and less new development with each day.
Personally I'm planning to work on a new game since couple of months, but I'm lacking artists, beside time actually. :|

My vacation started today ^^ so I will be back, I want to make some handy apps for on vacation, and maybe try to update bunjalloo or dsorganize and maybe time enough to learn how I could add the flash player demo to the webbrowser and make it work like it would actually run flash from within the browser =O

I think I will be busy :3 We're gonna revive the nds :P Everybody has one, we only have the battle against the smartphones 8D

Thanks. I hear the first year is really hard. Putting the kids to sleep can be intense.

It is important to remember that the iOS developer program is a private club. Ultimately, Apple gets to decide if something is allowed or not. Apple can kick you out of the club if you follow the rules but somehow manage to be obnoxious. Apple can also approve apps that discreetly break the rules but are in the spirit of the program. The rules can and do change, so any particular draft can be seen as a set of general guidelines. A lot of legal clauses are "just" CYA that will not be enforced unless there is trouble. If you have no intentions of causing trouble, you are probably OK.

Yup, the first year was nuts. I Now (they are 4), it's a blast. They are fun and funny, and MUCH easier.

Yeah, I think that's true. But it surprises me how many people find that acceptable. I don't :)

You could hedge your bets and develop using a middleware platform that targets both Android and iOS. I'm using Moai.

Nice to know to know that twins are more fun as they get older.

#177618 - LOst? - Tue Oct 02, 2012 8:13 pm

Oh yes, I am here!

Still hoping to get a good game running on the DS(i). I have great plans for the future, but I have been running into walls for days now (first time with wifi (dswifi), and buffer/speed problems).

I joined here in 2003 (I think) having all kinds of questions about GBA hardware, and how to do games the right way. Now I feel I have reached such a level that I could help others. Still there is a few areas, including the DSi mode/DS<->DS communication where I feel things have not been progressing any further, and that is a scary future scenario for us!

And I am not 1% interested in 3DS. I am in for DS and GBA because of the SNES type hardware where all my childhood games were born.

I'm still currently working on the backend stuff of my game/demo as well as the tools that I use. Probably going to get some gameplay stuff going as soon as I get the pixel art stuff done.

Unfortunately we're just a fistful of developers left here. The bright days are indeed passed. BTW I'm still having fun doing stuff on the DS, and I recently bought a GBA and a SuperCard DS so I'll have even more fun sometime soon, hopefully :D

But the people who are left are all good people with alot of knowledge, experience, and passion for the hardware and games! That's a good base :)

I dunno, I don't know that I ever had much more than a passing knowledge of the hardware, and my passion for the hardware is just about gone (although I sure do miss it!)

Really I just keep coming back because I miss the community that used to exist here -- probably the nicest online community I've been part of.

I wonder how many of us still open the forums up at least once every few days like I do, just in case. Anyways I've recently found some time to continue work on a really old project I was working on. We'll see how that goes.

#177631 - sverx - Thu Oct 04, 2012 8:54 am

I do check this forum on a daily basis. BTW recently I'm lacking ideas and collaboration for the non-coding parts :|

A while ago I made some RSS stuff to watch this board. It's not perfect, but it's good enough for me. You guys can try it out if you want: http://www.feed43.com/users/ritz/opml

Nope, unfortunately not anymore (since 2007 – 5 years ago!).

I'm a senior web developer now, mostly coding on online payments and financial back-office projects.
I really, really, really do miss the old times. Just playing around with DS hardware registers and reading/sharing random findings on irc. ;)
