Just wondering if avatars will ever be allowed in these forums, or if there's a reason mods are disallowing them?

Avatars? Huh?

Small image that you can attach to your profile to appear under your username in postings.
My opinion: Unusually enough, I have none.
Dan.

This forum is totally anti-image.
I also believe that avatars would kill our professional edge :)
#28181 - SimonB - Wed Oct 27, 2004 6:08 pm
I really dont see any need for avatars. I think, if anything, avatars for "top posters" would be the first to be implemented but for now I am happy with how everything is.
Simon

I agree with the LG. An avatar is more of a fun thing than a serious thing. Probably 98% of all avatars I've seen are not even the user's own created image, but ripped from another image, usually art from a professional ( without written consent! =P ).
As we currently stand as home-brew developers, it would probably be best to stick to the non-avatar forum format.

I doubt we'll see copied avatars; it would most likely be a clip of their honoured game. But there's no need here; it's not a teen chat room where a metal gear av makes you suddenly cool :D

Oh, I've seen that. I find it annoying.

Actually this forum is allready pretty boosted with silly images. I hope that they could be replaced with text, so it would say [REPLY], [WWW], [ICQ] or something like that (maybe without brackets).

In fairness, those images are phpBB defaults and very small. Your browser should be caching them, so it's not requesting them from the site very often (if ever).
Most boards have things like smileys and avatars going on... there is something to be said for the plain and simple elegance that is gbadev.
Dan.
#28207 - keldon - Wed Oct 27, 2004 8:07 pm
set it as a text BB theme when he's not looking; I'm sure he won't notice it's graphics =D
#28219 - tepples - Wed Oct 27, 2004 11:35 pm
How about allow static PNG or JPEG avatars of up to 120x80 pixels? That'd be big enough for a screenshot.

I'd vote to remain without avatars. I think they clutter an interface that is professional, functional, and quick to load.

I'd like to post my avatar, it's small and I made it all by myself.. and I mean ALL by myself, no copied images, it's all 3D and I figured out how to use Maya with only minimal tutorials (ie. This is how you zoom and rotate).
HOWEVER... I agree wholeheartedly that this site does just fine without them. I've gone to some other sites in search of more DS info, and I've run into some gaudy av's. As for images, they've let people put huge pics as part of their sig, I'm talking 600x150 or something like that, bigger than most banner ads. The site looks rediculous, and the conversation follows the lines of... (yes, this is from an actual forum!)

lol toastman your the fool man you can make fun of him all you want but as i said to you in the past you can even make fun of someone whose coding experience is better then yours for example what did you make. |
It goes on like that for another 2 or 3 sentances, which is roughly 1/4 screen. AND... it had been edited. Edited? Ugh...
Please! Keep this forum sane! I have to applaud Simon and the moderators (I see tepples is a moderator now) for doing a good job of locking out forums that go nowhere ("I want to make illegal copies of games. Any help?") and kicking out people like Pirro who want everyone else to do their work for them (wouldn't shut up about making that damn Harvest Moon game).
Sorry to go on so long. Short version, I'm happy with the forum, and I would not be upset at seeing avatars for top posters and/or moderators.

Haha, let me guess, gamedev.net? ;) The worst ones are the video-game-related forums on gaming sites that appear as "comment on this article here" and don't require registration. It's like walking into an asylum!

Ha ha...
Actually, it was taken from DCEmu.co.uk...
If you actually want to see the page it was from, here it is
http://www.dcemu.co.uk/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=news;action=display;num=1097667811
Also notice the 108x108 avatars and the 450x50 sig banner. Nowhere near as bad as one site I found sometime - I think last week - but still, not the direction I want to see this forum go.

Also I'd like to hail the high standard of grammar that we all have (or well, at least the regulars).
#28242 - keldon - Thu Oct 28, 2004 10:50 am
One forum I went on (and I am not lying), had one guy with 3 1MB movies in his sig, a 1MB avatar; and most people had followed suit with animated avatars. I really prefer it how it is; a signature is more than enough to express yourself; and if you like the image so much you can link to it :-/

SimonB, you are a mighty man with your fine grammar.
This is indeed a gloryful attribute. I shall see to getting you raised in ranks by one of the higher moderators as soon as possible, as you are one of the very capable men that reaches the forum grammar and social standard.
Sincerely,
Lord Graga of Haw-haw, England.

Lord Graga, I wouldn't dare accuse you of anything... not after that last unfortunate encounter we had... for which I apologize sincerely (the note-taking program elsewhere in the offtopic forum) but...

Uh, am I misunderstanding this, or are you suggesting that a moderator raise the rank of the person who owns this entire site? (At least, it's my understanding that SimonB owns the entire site). I really hope I've misunderstood... or maybe that's what the "Haw-haw" part was about?
But a little more on the topic again, I would have to strongly voice my opinion on the grammar and spelling abilities of the regulars on this site. That is - "You all... kick ass... [wipes a tear from his eye]... thank you!"
Let's keep up the good work!

Heck, I whish more countries did that. :) Actually, that's how a language evolve, and have the done for ages. Image if we all spoke like they did back in 1800-something.

That's all good, but it destroys unity; which is very destructive. And has our language actually evolved through these word changes?
All it has done is replaced words with newer ones of the same meaning ( apart from some slang which has created new words that cannot be described or expressed in any other form, but nethetheless is spelt the same worldwide ).
#28306 - poslundc - Fri Oct 29, 2004 12:37 pm

Then we wouldn't be able to speak about GBA development, as there wouldn't be a computing vocabulary.

Heheh, good point. People over here slowly keep replacing every word in the language with acronyms and initials...and misspellings in order to make their products and brands sound "trendier". I feel like 10 years from now we'll all be speaking in letters. Arrgghh!

You can have old grammer with new vocabulary:
"Thoust startup code shall be placed near to thine Advanced Boyhood of Game ROM's header, thus to not hearsest one's self denoted as 'heathen'."

Not "trendier" but distinctive. Trademark law has very specific requirements on what constitutes a distinctive mark.

Thoust hast mispelled...eth thine words... er, rather...eth... you usedeth the wrong...eth... word.
I could actually use the olde style english, but I choose not to... in all seriousness though, shouldn't this:
