OffTopic > If you could only ask one question for the rest of your life

#75141 - sgeos - Fri Mar 10, 2006 1:26 pm

Scenario: For the rest of your life, you can only say five phrases.
"Yes."
"No."
"How much does this cost?"
"Where is the bathroom?"
You can choose the fifth phrase, but it must be a question. What question do you choose?

Wow, this sounds a lot like my life here in China ;-)

I'd choose "can you help me?"

Ok I'm torn between, "don't you just have msn or a textable phone number?", and, "Know where I can find mates who are psychic?"

"Can you please give me some paper and pencil so I can write down what I am trying to tell you?"

Before you go to a foreign country, what phrases do you think would be most useful. Assume a one week trip.

I'm going to go with:
    A) Where is the bathroom?
    B) Yes.
    C) No.
    D) Basic counting.
    E) How much does this cost?

I should probably get in the habbit of asking what I really want to know in the first place. =P Admittedly, psychic mates was really funny.

Not my lifestyle. I'm a version of Mr. Square. Note the stars. =P
Clearly a winner for the promiscuous. =)

You hit the basics.

Another good thing to remember is to grab appropriate written things to show to people. For example, it really helps to get a hotel's business card to show to taxi drivers.

By the way, where are you travelling to?

Well I found that knowing the number system and basic greetings and responses gets me around most of the time. Basically the sort of things they teach you in your first year of high school. So it is pretty much what Brendan said.
