Honestly, this has got to be the most moronic desision ever. They hype up a system as apealing to all ages. Then they slap us(we?) in the face with a name that makes you sound like an idiot.
I wouldn't mind if it were an acronym, but they named their killer console "WE"!
Think about it. Other names mean something.
Famicom - Family Computer
Super Famicom - Better version of the original Family Computer
NES - Nintendo Entertainment System
SNES - Better version of the original NES
N64 - 64 bits
GameCube - A console in the shape of a cube
Game Boy - Small version of a game system
GBA - Game Boy with Advanced visuals
DS - Dual Screens / Developer System

360 - Global environment / Being surrounded and immersed

I doubt a company like nintendo would go from a name like Revolution, meaning big change/impact to a name that is what you use a toilet for

I really want to play with Nintendo's Wii. :-P
I feel sorry for the parents come Christmas when their little kids come up to them and say "Mommy, I want a Wii for Christmas!!"

But seriously, those parents are going to be confused. "You want a We? What are you talking about?"
Part of the name I dislike is that it's pronounced as an already heavily used word that is short and undiscriptive and that can lead to a lot of confusion.
I mean if the game system was called "That", it would cause just as much confusion. However, if it were called something unique or seldom used word like "Platypusplayer", at least when you ask for one, the parents will know what you are talking about.

I've read this thread, and seem to note that any attempt to figure out what Wii means, do not even attempt to try to think that Nintendo is not a company whose first language is english. I could have some Japanese ties, or it could be a horribly Engrish version of "Wee" (where in the Japanese symbols that produce the english "Wee" sound would be Wii)
It could also be tied to "wry" "wao" or "wai". Technically, or atleast not in Canada (where I live), there is no trademark law that would stop something like "Yeah!" or "Yahoo!" from being a company trademark. In a similar note, you can also trademark the words "fuck" and "shit" in Canada.
Oh and BTW, Winnie the Pooh was not created by Disney. It was created by a Canadian in Winnipeg, Manitoba. The creator was walking through the zoo with Christopher, and somehow a topic came up to make stories about a bear in the cage named Winnie. Christopher suggested it be Winnie the Pooh. "Why Pooh?" the creator asked. "Just because" answered Christopher Robin.
