See http://games.slashdot.org/games/06/06/07/2028216.shtml
Games will cost US$4.50 to US$8.99. In my opinion thats a bit high :-( I would like to play Mario on my Rev, but i hoped it would cost me 2-4$ :-(
#86609 - tssf - Thu Jun 08, 2006 7:19 am
bah it's better than the 10 dollar amount that was rumored for the N64 games. 'sides, what's a few bucks anyway? Not such a big deal.

EXACTLY. I'm just glad there will be a legal alternative finally. Doesn't look like they'll be gouging customers unlike a certain used game store I know of that has a copy of Secret of Mana.... for $65.
#86635 - tepples - Thu Jun 08, 2006 1:40 pm
Secret of Mana is still "safe" at $65 because it was published by Square, not Nintendo. As of the last update of the Wikipedia article, only Sega, Hudson Soft, and SNK have announced Virtual Console distribution deals with Nintendo.

Are you kidding me? thats fantastic value.
$4-$9
Which is ?3-6 or so.
Fantastic stuff.
Also, these are not confirmed VC game prices, these were actualy the prices for *new* games distributed on the VC.

#86641 - Lynx - Thu Jun 08, 2006 2:32 pm
Heh.. Any game under $40 is cheap!
#86650 - Critical_Impact - Thu Jun 08, 2006 3:50 pm
Yeah but these are older games, though for $10 that seems pretty cheap, i wouldnt mind playing old games again. Wii is defintly shaping up to be a pretty cool console me reckons
#86657 - shaz - Thu Jun 08, 2006 4:06 pm
I think the less rated games will get cheaper...

I can buy a used SMB cart for a buck, so yeah, seems a bit much for some games.

Nintendo of Europe always converts $ to ?.
$4.50 = ?4.50
$8.99 = ?8.99
For sure!

Though the Euro is worth more than the USD, this practice is considered fair because list prices in the US don't include sales tax, while list prices in Europe do.

Whats more important to me is good organisation of the games to be honest.
This is what Nintendo wont do, but they should:
*Anyone that buys a game can leave comments and a rateing for it out of ten
*Anyone that completes the game can rate it again out of ten, and that rateing is weighted more.
When browseing games you can then order by rateing, and also look at comments.
Think about it, there could be hundreds, possibly thousands of gams on this system. How do you find a good one to play?
We probably all know a few we want to get straight away, but I'm also interested in discovering new stuff :)
This applys even more to new downloadable games.
Indie and small scale games shouldnt need to advertise or spend on premotion, it would be fastastic if they earnt their reputation and position on the download list by how much people enjoyed playing them.
You could have a "best of the week", "best of the month" thing.
Nintendo probably wont do this, but they should.
A "newgrounds" of games, effectively.

Yes, that would be awesome. Unforunately it sounds like one of those "too awesome for Nintendo to actually do" things. Nothing stops you from making such a system online, though, where people post comments and rate games. You'd even be able to view and post the comments from your Wii.
Speaking of which, how will we enter text in the Wii's browser?

Either connect a USB keyboard or use the Wiimote to point and shoot.

Theres USB ports, so why not a USB keyboard and mouse?
Wii Opera is coming, and its been confirmed to use keyboard [though not necessarily, they also suggested in using the wiimote with unique input]

Yeah, I want to kill pop-ups with my mighty sword!
#86845 - Darkflame - Fri Jun 09, 2006 9:41 pm
:D
That idea was simerla to my vision of an Augmented Reality future (one where a virtual world is seamless added ontop of the real world as a supliment in everything we do).
As I anticipated pop-up adverts, I thought you could point your (3d) stylus at them to shoot them out of the sky.
(of course, you would really be blocking the ID of the sender, but the visuals could show it explodeing :p)

I'm hoping someone finds a way to launch [already downloaded] roms from a memory device.

"already downloaded roms"? Are you specifically talking about the NES section of pdroms.de?

I wouldn't bet money on it.

He's talking about piracy.

It doesn't matter what "already downloaded ROMs" you are talking about, it could be copies from cartridges you own, homebrew software from pdroms.de, software you wrote yourself, piracy, etc. The word "already downloaded" has square brackets around it?

Given a ROM, the follow verbs mean vastly different things to me:
get = vague, could be anything
download = steal, or "get" a free ROM
upload = transfer to an in house or third party server
build = make (I can build it myself, or someone else can build it)
dump = pull from hardware
The square brackets and use of "download" means "including but not limited to piracy" to me. When native English speakers intentionally use vague or broad verbs they are often indicating shady behavior without lying.

Mostly I mean PD/Homebrew stuff for NES/SNES, but I ofcourse have roms of carts I own, even though depending on wich country you live in/what you read the legality of have in roms you didnt backup yourself is a bit questionable. Also now you can get rippoff nes consoles (apparently the hardware patents ran out recently) with about 5 or 6 cdroms full of nes roms. But for the sake of the question and because people dont like the idea of using commercial roms (although I bet most people into retro gamming have tonnes of them) I will re-state,
I hope someone finds a way to run non-commercial, downloaded roms from whatever memory device the Wii will use.

Fantastic. I think being able to run homebrew software on the Wii would be neat.

I may not be "most people", but you should see my NES, SNES, GB and PS game selection. The PS games have cases, but most of carts are without boxes and manuals because I buy cheap used games.

The software is illegal last time I checked. The hardware is legal. I'd like to see a unit that boots off carts plus some other standard media. The old Hong Kong backup units are rare and expensive and are probably antiquated at this point. Admittedly, I don't have a use for such a device- hence "see"ing it would be neat.

A significant fraction of so-called "NES homebrew" does not work at all on NES hardware, as it was developed against inaccurate emulators. See nesdevwiki:Program Compatibility.
