DS Misc > Dune 2 port to DS?

#90140 - Dark Knight ez - Wed Jun 28, 2006 4:17 pm

Edit:
My intent is actually to create an engine which uses the gameplay of Dune 2 on the DS.
Graphics and textfiles customizing the engine to look like Dune 2 or any other copyrighted game, will not be distributed by me. The user will have to do this for himself. It's probable some sort of graphics and textfiles pack will be released with the engine, but that will be all original content.

Hmm... I was thinking of creating a remake of Dune 2 for the DS.
It's not TA, but in my view it's even better. It should be strategy enough for most people; it being the grand master RTS which started it all*.

Mock ups:

I've sent an email to the creator of D2TM, see if I can at least get the AI he uses and such. At least the graphics (mostly 16x16 tiles or sprites) suit the DS well. Plus most of the sounds are available in wav-format.

I don't have the time to undertake such a project by myself though. If programmers are interested in helping out with Dune2S, contact me.

*It is said there were one or two RTS games before Dune2, but not nearly as popular.

Perhaps. :D He'll be one of the last things added though.

I just realised that in order to get this noticed, and get responses from
other programmers, this'll need to go in a new topic. Plus it doesn't really
fit in this current topic, which is more about two TA games. :)
Maybe a moderator can split this? Or should I create a new topic myself?

if you want a RTS, please rebuild C&C, grafix is a lot better and game is well playable too.

i think nintendo DS must be able to to run tiberian sun or C&C red alert 2

#90298 - Dark Knight ez - Thu Jun 29, 2006 11:37 am

I find them less fun. Plus, the graphics are not really suited for DS.
Dune 2's graphics exists mostly out of 16x16 tiles.

edit: And not only that, but it seems everything uses a 256 colour palette. :)
I'll start working on the showing maps on the NDS.
If anyone is interested in helping out on this project, let me know.
If I were to do the entire remake by myself, it would take a very long time to complete.

I'm interested in helping, though I don't know how much help I can be. I'm just now starting to learn C and C++, so just reading the code would certainly help me to learn a LOT, but I'm a decent graphics artist myself, and I know some sprite artists that might be persuaded to help. (and if you noticed, yes, I know I posted this same basic response in another thread to the MMORPG game - but both games interest me so much I'd love to do anything I could to help out with them).

I've sent you a PM.

why not C&C redalert, or warcraft 2 those games look allot better and are really fun.
C&C was also on the N64 so it most be possible to make it for the DS.

I really dont understand why there isnt any RTS game out for the DS except for those turn-based shitty ones.
It would be really cool to play a RTS game like C&C or something else online with the DS.

Dune 2 being the first serious RTS game anywhere, and given that an open source engine has been made to play the game, and the fact that coding something as simple as Dune 2 will be FAR simpler than trying to code a more complex game like C&C, and the fact that Dune 2 is VASTLY underrated AND fantastically fun, and... and... AND.... etc...

You gotta start somewhere, and obviously, Dark Knight ez has chosen this as his project, so this is what he's doing. I'm not saying the other games wouldn't be good on the DS, but Dune 2 is NO slouch in the RTS department (consider ALL RTS since Dune 2 have derived at least some, if not most of their mechanics and design FROM Dune 2), backed by an EXCELLENT story by Frank Herbert, there's just too many reasons to port this. I'm VERY glad to hear it's being made for the DS. :)

Okay, you've got me there. I'd been wondering if there were others out there... BUT to Dune 2's credit, most every RTS since Dune 2 has stolen from the formula popularized in the game. They all steal some manner of mechanics from Dune 2 (and I'm not talking just the overhead view). Also Herzog Zwei isn't considered by many to be a serious RTS game, considering the quality of the AI... or at least not a very high quality one. But eh, we're really scraping the bottom of the barrel here. I have at least one friend that DID like the game, but I never really got into it.

Dune 2 is copyrighted, and the name is trademarked.

AND, So is Star Control 2, but that's been successfully, and LEGALLY ported by other people. They went to the copyright owners and got written legal consent, which is, AFAIK, what Dark Knight said his intent was to do.

*edit*
The name of Star Control 2 wasn't handed over, so the though the game was ported, the name had to be changed to The Urquan Masters. For all intents and purposes, though, the game was identical, despite this flaw.

People have tried that, and failed. There are also Dune 2 remake projects available for the PC, which have not been shut down as of yet.

What I'll be doing different is this:
My intent is actually to create an engine which uses the gameplay of Dune 2 on the DS.
Graphics and textfiles customizing the engine to look like Dune 2 or any other copyrighted game, will not be distributed by me. The user will have to do this for himself. It's probable some sort of graphics and textfiles pack will be released with the engine, but that will be all original content.

As far as I know, that makes my activities legal.

#90837 - Scorpei - Sun Jul 02, 2006 10:02 pm

Fan games are legal I think, you just cant make money out of them (not sure here).

#90845 - Dark Knight ez - Sun Jul 02, 2006 10:59 pm

Even though there are occasions they are condoned, it doesn't mean they are legal.
Still, me not using the copyrighted material, and only creating a gameplay similiar is a valid and legal solution.

No. I have two projects currently, and that is more than enough.

#93473 - Mota - Wed Jul 19, 2006 11:38 am

will your Dune 2 engine thingy allow you to drag-select multiple units at once? The original didn't, and I just can't play it now as a result.

#93475 - Dark Knight ez - Wed Jul 19, 2006 12:14 pm

Yes. As well as many other enhancements.
The control schemes and (G)UIs will be quite nice, making sure this version takes as much advantage of the DS as we're able to create. I have no doubt that I'm really going to enjoy the new things this engine will have added to it. I won't drop any hints regarding it yet though. ;p
In due time I'll release more information on this project.

Mrshlee, I have started a project to port Abuse to the DS. It hasn't got very far at the moment though, and I've no idea whether it will work, but I'm having a go.

I'm very happy to hear Dune 2 is getting a DS port. I played the hell out of that game when I had a 486.

I understand the comparison to Herzog Zwei, but I feel like it was more of a genre buster and not the revolutionary that Dune 2 was. Never in my life have I been more frustrated with giant transforming robots.
