DS Misc > iam stuck on a mod for my Ds

#90715 - jester - Sat Jul 01, 2006 10:51 pm

iam thinking of modifying my Ds with equipment what would you ppl from the homebrew community like to be modified into a DS think imaginary but can also be done quite easily!

#90716 - dualscreenman - Sat Jul 01, 2006 10:55 pm

Hmm... I don't know... maybe put a pair of speakers on the other side of the top half of the DS.

Eh, I should just buy a pair of headphones.

If you want something really challenging, try getting the top screen to display on a TV. :p

iam thinking of making a fan powered by my DS any other ideas!

#90719 - Nushio - Sat Jul 01, 2006 11:34 pm

Why not Un-heck it?

Ben Heckerdon makes consoles portable, so the opposite would be making the DS a console.

What about plugging a SNES controller to play the DS with?

#90720 - dualscreenman - Sat Jul 01, 2006 11:39 pm

That's kinda what I was going for with the TV thing.

#90771 - spinal_cord - Sun Jul 02, 2006 9:40 am

i will do the led and speakers

#90794 - freemaan - Sun Jul 02, 2006 3:29 pm

Try to louder the headphones, make a better backlight on Phat DS and add an external wifi antenna :)

#90806 - thundrestrike - Sun Jul 02, 2006 6:00 pm

Make a redesign of the Nintendo DS.

You know how they made the Regular DS into a DS Lite?
That is a redesign.

Why don't you make a new redesign of the Nintendo DS? That would be neat.

I think the power led is dual color, or at least two seperate led's, not sure how youd work around it. I havent opened my DS so i dont even know if they are easy to change ( they might be tiny).

Take apart a supercard and integrate it into the DS. I took mine apart the other day because I melted the shell in my car, and realized it could very well be possible.

Actually the power led is two colour.

There are three leds on the board.

Orange (Charger) Led
Red (Low Battery) Led
Green (Power) Led.

But the green can change to orange too. Touch the pins at the bottem of the Power Management Chip. One of the pins will make the led change colour. Some pins do different things, even makes the ds restart etc.

ive decided iam going to modify my DS shell and then afterwards and going to set up a compo!

#91038 - zzo38computer - Tue Jul 04, 2006 3:48 am

Replace the screws with proper ones, make the firmware chip removable if it is not a DS Lite or the SL1 easier to touch if it is a DS Lite, install more memory, add a extra button (DEBUG button), add a speed switch, add wired WiFi, replace microphone port with a standard one, make the writing on the buttons easier to read, replace the label on the bottom that says "RSA SECURED" with "ARM POWERED", built-in CF card reader, let the DS to be used as a CF drive to your computer, paint designs on the lid, etc.

have you already tried to overclock it?

#91609 - HyperHacker - Sat Jul 08, 2006 4:58 am

If you added GBA link capability, ability to overclock in software, or ability to read (not necessarily play) GBC carts, I can't see anyone else having much chance at winning. Adding a debug button would probably be pretty good too.

I might take part in this compo depending on the prize :D

He'd have my vote. I'm hoping someone will figure out a way to add a GBA link cable port to the DS. Playing GBC games will be tricker without somehow wiring in a GBC CPU (but stranger mods could happen). But if any of these ever come to pass, I may just get a DS Lite and mod my old DS for fun.

You could always use the GBC on GBA emulator...

#93596 - tepples - Thu Jul 20, 2006 12:49 am

Could use Goomba Color, but then how would you dump the Game Paks? Or are you planning on making it a Game Genie style device that maps the whole GBC cart space into GBA SRAM (which would actually just involve a few level shifters)?

Yeah, the idea is you use an adaptor to let the DS read GBC carts, and then emulate the GBC itself. Mapping GBC ROM ($0000-7FFF) to GBA SRAM would be nice, but might not work very well, because you still have the GBC SRAM ($8000-9FFF) to worry about. I think the GBC carts might recieve read signals (not write) for $A000-FFFF too, even though that's GBC internal RAM and I/O.

Then map $0000-$9FFF directly to the cart.

Modify a DS CARTRIDGE to read a MicroSD card. If we can get the GBA slot free, we can use the ruble pack or BETTER YET we could use the cart that comes with the web browser!

Actually I guess we can already do that with wifi and all... but then we're limited in space...

#93796 - jester - Fri Jul 21, 2006 9:14 am

well these are all great ideas however iam currently involved in a ds homebrew game project once iam done i will work on my MOD fro my DS

Magic Key 2 can already do that, right?

Oh, right, GBA SRAM is 64KB. I thought it was only 32. ^_^;

Hey! for 32 ruble(which is 1$ heh) you can get a decent airsoft gun thats the size of a deagle, and a box of bullets! Of course most people lurking on these forums are geeks and will probably manage to shoot themselves... I know I have :D

I love airsoft.
I recently bought myself a FAMAS.

It's a nice gun.

(And for the record I shot myself in the leg with my airsoft Beretta once, that hurt, broke the skin.)

#101106 - spinal_cord - Sat Sep 02, 2006 5:01 pm

Have you tried anything yet? you could put blue led's inside the cart slots, so when there is no cart inside, the hole would glow blue.
