Well, no one seems to read the hardware section - so i'll post my question here.
I basically want to reduce the size of the GBAMP sticking out atleast a bit (mainly in preperation for DS lite - I don't want that sticking out that much more!)
Quote: |
would it be safe to cut the GBA connector pins by half way?

It can't be done. BTW if you put a gbamp inside a ds lite, it looks mega ugly...

I mean the GBA connectors on the game cart, not inside the console..
#93491 - shaz - Wed Jul 19, 2006 3:40 pm
I know... you can't though. I just opened it like a minute ago and theres no spare for cuttings. Only a teeny bit of space for cutting but theres no point at all...

OK then, giving up with the shrinking idea,
how about putting the GBAMP into a translucent case (GBC case), trim the things so it fits in the GBA slot in DS, and adding an LED
that would atleast make it look cooler
(note: /me has a LED :p)
JUST 1 THING: how on earth do you open GBC games?@!!?!?

? :p
do you mean with a real hammer? that could shatter the case..

I managed to unscrew that screw in the back with a needlenose pliers, although it tooks some effort. From there, just push the front side of the cartridge (the side with the label) down, towards the metal contacts, and it should slide off. I found this out the hard way. I tried pulling the front and back apart at the opening at the bottom. When it didn't pop out, I used the pliers to force it open. It's not a big deal really, since the game refused to boot correctly and I had already given up all hope of retrieving the saves from it. But it still would have been nice to know that I didn't have to mutliate the cartridge.
#93562 - Dan2552 - Wed Jul 19, 2006 10:26 pm
hehe unlucky..
I know it slides because so do GBA cartridges, and i opened my minish cap :)
Sadly I don't have needle pliers, and i've already tried my smallest pliers which I do have (too big).
Any other suggestions to get that screw out?

I'd think tweezers would snap :s .. I'll try later.
edit---
well as i thought, no success there.....

If you can arrange a way to keep the ends of a paperclip very close together, you might be able to use that. The diameter of the end of a paperclip is small enough to fit in each of those small 6 holes. I didn't get this to work myself, but it's worth a shot.
Oh, and I tried the same sliding technique on my GBA flash cart, but I couldn't get it to work too well. I accidentally ended up forcing that apart somewhat, so right now I've got a flash cart with 1 broken latch... the other side is still intact, so unless I purposely pull the two sides apart, I'm fine.

I opened 2 today by using a fine metal point. Stick it in the gaps of the screw and push, with some effort, it'll turn eventually.
Also, if you don't mind frying the chips inside, heating the screw with a soldering iron makes it really easy to turn.

=========EDITED======
WELL WELL! So far i've got the GBAMP fitting without the Compact flash card!

Moonshell!!!

All that needs doing now is making it so I can easilly get the Compact Flash in and out, making the case stay together - I demolished it to get inside; and adding the LED

Where are you going to add the LED, I might want to do it and sell it for more lol

not sure yet
and i wouldnt copy just yet :p the case is in such aweful condition now that i've made a hole for the Compact flash and everything - I think I'm going to use the base of the GBAMP original case with the transparent bit on top...
You'd probably have more success then me if you actually get the screw off the proper way.. (i'll show later in pics how much of the GBC case i actually had to trim away....)
#93664 - Dan2552 - Thu Jul 20, 2006 3:34 pm
here's a proof of that the LED (which i found out isnt even an LED) works
http://www.axek.org/dsgbamp/PictureLIGHT.jpg
#93668 - derula - Thu Jul 20, 2006 3:56 pm
Er... this is not necessarily a proof. I should be no problem to fake something like this.
Anyway, what would a LED be for? To show it is reading from the CF? what for?

its just a led... for decoration
there's another thread that shows you can put LEDs on GBA games.. It was proof to myself atleast
anyway i found a real LED and that works (is also smaller)
#93678 - Dan2552 - Thu Jul 20, 2006 4:54 pm
Well I've kind of proven i'm crap at modding hardware now :D
so i just put the led in the normal GBAMP case and it shines through slightly :)
meh screw the GBC transparent case

I was wondering if there is any room to just shove the gbamp chip inside the ds along with the cf, and then use something kind of like a cable to connect the gbamp to the slot 2 connector. Is that possible?
#93704 - Dan2552 - Thu Jul 20, 2006 8:54 pm
totally possible if you can fit it in, but the GBAMP is pretty big.. you could also have a switch which enabled/disabled the GBAMP so you could also use other GBA carts

here it is.
Im planning on some sort of wrap around thingy for my gbamp, i dont like how much it sticks out from the lite.

Seems like a waste of battery power. If you could make it light up when accessing the CF card, that'd be pretty cool.

if its as easy as what i've already done, tell me what to connect the wires to and i'd do it
#93754 - tepples - Fri Jul 21, 2006 12:37 am
It would involve some circuitry for detecting when the CF connector has ATA activity on it.

Does the GBAMP run the CF card in IDE mode? IDE has a pin that you could just connect an activity LED to.

All CF based GBA slot cards (that I've seen) use ATA mode for communication with the CF card.

uhhh... u guys do know that a regular SMALL flat-tip screwdriver can get at the screws without much hassle AND no damage?
just find a small, yet large enough one that fits the triangle, and unscrew it, but dont put the same screw back in, just use another screw from something else(preferably a philips head)

I don't think you're thinking of the same screw (not the tri-head ones)
anyway, this is a bloody old thread and that idea was totally ditched aaagesss ago
